PLANNING BOARD MEETING Monday, Sept. 15, 1952 Present: Adams, Hathaway, Irwin, Johnson, Potter, Ripley Meeting opened at 7:45 p.m. Bill Bill presented by Mr. John Lichtenberg for $51.20 icor bringing popu- lation map up to date. Unanimously voted the billbe paid,, PUBLIC HEARING - JAMES A. CARRIG A public hearing was held at 8 o'clock in the Engineer's $oosm, Town iia71, on petition of James A. Carrig and others to amend the Lexington. Zoning By-laws so as to change to a local business district a.section of land at corner of Watertown.st. and Concord Turnpike owned,by James.A. Carrig. In view of the large number attending, the meeting was adjourned to Cary Hall, Mr. Daniel A. Lynch, attorney for Mr. Carrig, presented the petition and stated what he believed were the advantages to be obtained from having a shopping center in this area. He stressed the growth in population and assessed valuation over a ten-year period, with the need for more business area with adequate parking facilities; also a means of income other than that of taxes from the homeowner. Many questions and remarks were made by citizens attending. Among the points brought out were that altho nearby cities and towns had more business the taxes were just as high or higher; that it has been a matter of policy of Le:dngton and neighboring towns to keep business off the Pike; that once business is established in an area there is an insidiousEt' owth and in a short time you no longer have a residential area; increased traf- fic hazards; the desire to keep Lexington as free frown scattered business areas as possible and thereby keep the rural atmosphere. The only person speaking in favor of the petition outside of the petitioners was Mr. Carl Johnson of Blossom street. On show of bonds there were 8 in favor, 73 opposed.
