<br /> The meeting was called to order by Moderator Hobert H . Holt
<br /> at 8 : 05 P .M .
<br /> There were about I75 Town meeting members present .
<br /> Article 5 . Selectman ivir . Trask makes motion Article five be taken
<br /> up first . Under this article James Stuart Smith offered the follow-
<br /> ing motion . 8 : 07 P .M .
<br /> VOTED : " That the sum of $ 234 , 937 .00 be appropriated and assess-
<br /> ed for the support of the public schools and for the payment of tuition
<br /> at the vocational schools for the current year . "
<br /> Mr . Smith gave the following information regarding what the
<br /> money was to be used for , and why at this time the amount should be
<br /> 412 , 000 . 00 more than last year . On the increase , Mr . Smith said ,that
<br /> this year , there were 121 more pupils in the local schools than there
<br /> were last year , and at the opening of the school year next Fall , there
<br /> would be a further estimated increase of 150 pupils to be cared for
<br /> during September , October , November and December out of this
<br /> , appropriation .
<br /> Continuing , he said , that a short time ago the maximum salary
<br /> for the teachers was raised, and each year the teacher budget is thus
<br /> increased . The Franklin School on Allen Street will require a new
<br /> staff of teachers in the Fail , when the school is first opened to the
<br /> pupils and the normal increase of the number of pupils in the schools
<br /> at large requires that new teachers be added to the various staffs to
<br /> care for the new pupils .
<br /> Mr . Smith pointed out that the school department turned back to
<br /> the Town about sixteen cents on every dollar invested. He estimated
<br /> that the schools , through tuition from other Towns , and from the State
<br /> and school funds , the total of 437 , 870. 0U will be turned back, making
<br /> the total cost of the operation of schools 4197 , 120 . 00 , stating , that
<br /> the cost per pupil for operation during 1930 was a little less than it
<br /> was in 1929 . 8 : 18 P .M.
<br /> The motion as offered by trIr . Smith was then presented by the
<br /> Moderator , tr .Holt , and was passed unanimously. 8 : 19 P .M.
<br /> Selectman Dr . Shannon moved that the balance of the appropriations
<br /> in Article Five be included in one motion , but voted Spon seperately
<br /> and under this motion , the following votes were passed , uxaanimously ,
<br /> _ except as noted . 8 : 21 P .M .

<br /> Assessor ' s appropriation was questioned by Mr . Fred Moulton,
<br /> asking bow much of the *6 , 915 . 00 asked for ,was for salaries of the
<br /> assessor ' s .
<br /> Selectman Dr . Shannon replied, that * 900 . 0u was for salaries
<br /> and 46 , 000 . 00 was for expenses , explaining a man was on duty in the
<br /> . assessor ' s office , all the time dtring the day .
<br /> Mr . Moulton asks , 'by salary of man mentioned not included
<br /> under salaries of assessors .
