Installed 2,000 feet of formed asphalt <br />curbing and installed or repaired more than 600 feet of <br />hand - formed asphalt curbing to prevent roadside erosion. <br />• Sidewalk Improvements: Replaced sidewalks on sections of <br />Meriam, Bedford and Waltham Streets, Sedge Road, and <br />Brookside Avenue. 13 concrete handicapped sidewalks <br />ramps with tactile warning systems were installed on <br />Meriam Street. <br />• Storm Drain Maintenance: Repaired and rebuilt more than <br />30 catch basins. <br />• Catch Basin Cleaning: Cleaned all 4,766 catch basins. <br />• Street Sweeping: Performed by Town personnel on a <br />straight -time basis using two Town -owned sweepers. A <br />new sweeper, purchased through the capital budget, was <br />put into service in October. <br />• Traffic Line and Crosswalk Markings: A contractor painted <br />lines in the fall; DPW staff painted crosswalk and parking <br />lines in the spring and summer. <br />• Traffic Sign Maintenance: Maintained 2,400 traffic control <br />signs and 500 parking meters. All repairs and installations <br />were handled to ensure a timely response to traffic control <br />issues. Staff continued to use the computerized sign -cut- <br />ting machine to create larger, more - reflective street signs in <br />house. <br />• Traffic Signal Maintenance: Maintained 10 traffic control <br />signals and 11 additional flashing signals or spotlights. <br />Staff replaced bulbs, and a private contractor performed <br />repairs as needed. <br />• DPW Facility Move: During most of the summer and fall <br />staff concentrated on cleaning out the facility and moving <br />supplies and equipment to new storage areas. <br />Snow <br />Removal <br />Operations <br />ROLE: To han- <br />dle all snow- <br />plowing and <br />sanding opera- <br />tions using DPW <br />staff and 34 <br />Expenditures <br />Payroll <br />FY07 <br />FY06 <br />$3701377 <br />$3911511 <br />Expenses <br />$3871037 <br />$7101826 <br />Personnel <br />Full Time <br />All DPW <br />All DPW <br />Staff <br />Staff <br />pieces of Town -owned equipment including 8 sanders and <br />31 pieces of hired plowing equipment and operators. <br />HIGHLIGHTS: <br />• Lexington experienced 15 snow and ice events during the <br />2006 -2007 winter. Three storms required full plowing <br />operations by Town staff and outside contractors; 5,691 <br />tons of sand and salt were used, but no overnight opera- <br />tions to remove snow piles from the Center Business <br />District were necessary. <br />• New snow blowers have proven effective to clear snow <br />from the center and sidewalks, resulting in a much- clean- <br />er finished product. The loader- mounted blower permits <br />the clearing of snow from the center more frequently and <br />has proven to be more cost - effective. <br />Road Machinery Division <br />KULL: I o main- <br />tain all DPW vehi- <br />cles in a ready, <br />active status.
