a. Protect Exposure <br />°Stay upwind and upgrade °DO NOT assume that gases or vapors <br />' are harmless because of lack of smell. <br />°DO NOT walk into, inhale, <br />or touch the spilled material. °Keep unauthorized personnel away from <br />'the scene. <br />°Eliminate all ignition sources <br />(f~:ares, engines, smoking °Be aware that specified protective <br />materials, electrical sparks).. clothing andlor breathing apparatus <br />may be essential for a safe approach. <br />°Stay clear of the ends of tanks <br />'and paints of rupture. <br />b. Notify the Fire Department Headquarters and advise them of the situation. <br />e. Identify the Hazard <br />°Look for a placard, identifying the general type of hazard and the <br />materials present, on all surfaces of the container or vehicle <br />involved in the incident. <br />°In addition, a 4-digit number identifying the chemical may be <br />displayed either on the placard itself or on a separate orange panel. <br />°Consult DOT's 1987 Emergency Response Guidebook (DOT P 5800.2) to <br />determine what chemical the ID Number represents, the hazards <br />associated with it and the appropriate response actions. <br />°If possible, consult the driver and/or shipping papers to verify the <br />chemical's identity and ascertain the quantities of chemical(s) in <br />the containers or vehicle. <br />d. Notify Authorities <br />°Please Notify the following agencies as soon as possible (the party <br />responsible for the incident is required by law to make these <br />notifications): <br />1) Local Fire Department Headquarters <br />2) Massachusetts Department of Environmental Quality Engineering <br />Northeast/Metropolitan Boston Regional Office <br />Days (8:45 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.) (617) 935-2160 or (617) 727-5194 <br />Nights, Weekends, Holidays (617) 566-4500 (State Police Public <br />Safety Number) <br />3) National Response Center (800) 424-8802 <br />°Be prepared to supply the information listed on the "Information <br />Checklist Incident Information Form." <br />e. Contain Material <br />°Obtain expert advice from government authorities and the shipper, <br />concerning proper procedures for containment and level of protective <br />clothing necessary. <br />°For additional technical advice, call CHEMTREC (800-424-9300) and <br />~eonsult DOT's 1987 Emergency Response Guidebook. <br />°DO NOT use water to control an incident unless specifically recom- <br />mended for that chemical. <br />N-3 <br />
