ARTICLE 8 (r} <br /> Project: Munroe Tavern Capital Improvements <br /> CPA Category: Historic Resources <br /> Amount Requested: $400,000 <br /> Amount Recommended: up to $400,000 <br /> CPC Vote: <br /> Project Description: <br /> hi 2009, with the assistance of Community Preservation Act funds,the Lexington Historical <br /> Society undertook a Historic Structure Report and Building Needs Assessment of the Munroe <br /> Tavern, one of the most significant historic structures in Lexington. Based on the Building Needs <br /> Assessment,the Society has developed a plan for the restoration and renovation of the Munroe <br /> Tavern within its existing footprint. This will include: <br /> • Repairs and restoration of the historic fabric, including the restoration of the Colonial <br /> fireplace, covered over in 1860, and recently rediscovered; <br /> • Renovation of under utilized space to create a museum room that will accommodate <br /> visitor reception and school groups; <br /> • Installation of a public restroom; <br /> • Handicapped accessibility to the both the first and second floors of the structure; <br /> • Systems replacement and upgrading, including the provision of heat for the first time to <br /> the house museum, climate control to protect artifacts,complete re-wiring of the house, <br /> and replacement of the 90-year-old sprinkler system; <br /> • Augmentation of current collections storage with a basement level facility and a second <br /> floor addition over the museum room. <br /> Project Goals and Objectives: <br /> The goals and objectives of this project are to: <br /> • Provide adequate visitor facilities; <br /> • Provide handicapped accessibility to both floors of the house, so all visitors can <br /> experience the entire tour; <br /> • Create a comfortable environment that accommodates school groups; <br /> + Re-capture historic features, including the Colonial kitchen fireplace and the foundations <br /> of the old Masonic Hall, and repair and replace historic fabric; <br /> • Update outdated and unsafe systems; <br /> • Create an expanded collections storage facility with museum-quality climate-control. <br /> Project Benefit: <br /> This project meets virtually all of the"Category Specific Criteria" for historical projects under the <br /> Lexington CPA guidelines.Munroe Tavern is one of the community's most significant historic <br /> structures,the anchor of the Munroe Tavern Historic District, and is on the Federal and State <br /> Registers of Historic Places.The Tavern is visited by thousands annually, and visitation is <br /> growing. The Lexington Historical Society has a long history of providing permanent protection <br /> for the Town's historic resources. <br /> Funding Request: <br /> The funding request for this project is for an amount up to $400,000, or half of the total cost of <br /> project, currently estimated at$820,054. The balance of the funding will be raised by the <br /> Historical Society. <br /> 23 <br />
