Public Service Building - Cafeteria
1. Visitor Center Update — Don Mills (Mills Whitaker Architects) & Dawn McKenna (Lexington Tourism
Committee)
Don provided an update on three meetings that were held with the Visitor Center Stakeholders
related to design and its relationship to the existing site. Stakeholders have agreed to build a new
Visitor Center at the present location.
1. Review of conceptual drawings submitted November 2015 and were reviewed January of
2016.
2. Developed for review two different options, showing modifications. Bathrooms were
relocated downstairs reducing the overall footprint.
3. Tonight's presentation showed the combined modifications for discussion.
Don presented slides at PBC showing original building and pointed out the insufficiencies with the
current Visitor Center. The current building cannot handle the capacity of people that come in via
bus load or school groups.
Information for tourism and the retail needs related to customer service is greatly affected
due to lack of space and access to information and customer service.
• The Liberty Ride is also located in this building in a small area.
Historical displays and information are not easily accessible when large groups are in the
Visitor Center. Plaques are poorly represented in the area due to space restriction.
Original drawings did not include a basement. The stakeholder meetings to date elected to do a full
basement, and move the bathrooms to the basement. Through discussion at this meeting It was
agreed that further discussion is needed related to design, bathroom locations, building materials,
and parameters for putting the estimate together.
201 BEDFORD STREET • LEXINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS 02420
