17 LEXINGTON CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE Minutes of the Fifth Meeting, October 18, 1955 The fifth meeting of the Town Celebrations Com- mittee was held in a conference room in Cary Hall on the evening of October 18 Mr Lewis called the meet- ing to order at 8 10 p.m Nine members were present Mesdames Cheever and Williams, Messrs Lewis, Dear- born, Rooney, Gustin, Foster, Frothingham, and Belcher The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved Mr Lewis read a letter from Mr Reed giv- ing us answers to the questions we asked him on the evening of October 5 concerning problems as to the operation of our committee. 1) The duties and scope of the Committee as DUTIES well as the authority fall under the direction and authority of the Board of Selectmen 2) The Board will pay for expenses connected EXPENSES with UN Day and writing materials Budget should be started at once and will be due by December 15, 1955 The Board unanimously agrees with our suggestion of budget approved one year in advance and urges us to submit two this year ( 1956 and 1957) . 3) Flags will be displayed on the Common on FLAGS Monday, October 24 4) The Board is unanimously in favor of hav- TREE ing a tree planted on UN Day in memory of Julius Seltzer Mr Maloney would like to donate the tree a d-the Bo-ardsigge-sts ourcuntacting-Chanes Brent.,LA of the Shade Tree Department about the kind of tree and where it is to be planted Mr Rooney volunteered to pick up the budget forms and a copy of last year' s budget at the Town Office for the next meeting Mr Lewis said he would answer the Selectmen' s letter acknowledging their approval and help in planting a tree on UN Day and informing them that such a celebration would be impossible this year because the Town Celebrations Committee has not been appointed until the last of August and wasn' t able to meet with the Selectmen 1 until October 5 L Mrs Cheever reported that cards had been
