-2-
Chairman Lewis L. Hoyt stated that the Appropriation Com-
mittee had voted to increase his salary from $300.00 to $400.00
a year effective July 1, 1944, and to so inform the Board of
Selectmen.
Ronald D. Brown, Vice Chairman, spoke with regard to
the needs of the School Committee . These had been discussed
previously with J. Milton Brown in attendance. Mr. Brown
stated that the School Committee wanted a transfer of $4,555.44
from the Reserve Fund to provide for the additional monies
needed for salaries and repairs .
It was decided to consider the additional require-
ments for salaries in the amount of $2,002.00 first. The
School Committee stated that because of the resignations of
teachers, approximately $1, 200.00 would be saved on the bonus.
Fifteen teachers have left and two have been replaced at the
same salary. The School Committee needs $300.00 for hiring
new teachers - this amount to take care of slight increases.
In the Senior High School a woman teacher has been replaced
by a man teacher at a salary of $2, 500.00. Because of the
increase in salary, $335.00 is required from the Reserve Fund
for this year. The School Committee wants another man teacher
at $2,500.00 a year which will mean $167.00 from the Reserve
Fund. In the Junior High a man teacher is needed; the salary
$1,800.00. This is an increase of $500.0q and $167.00 is needed
from the Reserve Fund. A teacher for mathematics is necessary -
requiring $133.00 from the Reserve Fund. One of the Elementary
Schools needs a building assistant. They now have three, but
a fourth is needed. Each draws a salary of $1,300.00 a year.
An additional $433.00 will be requiredfrom the Reserve Fund.
Another teacher is essential at a salary of $1,400.00. This
means $467.00 from the Fund. The School Committee expects
an increase in the size of classes in the Elementary Schools.
To provide for the increase in salaries of new teachers will
mean taking $2,002.00 from the Reserve Fund. This will amount
to a yearly increase of approximately $6,300.00.
A motion was made, seconded and voted that a transfer
from the Reserve Fund up to $2,002.00 be made to the School
Department, Personal Service Budget, and the following letter
be sent to the School Committee:
"At the meeting of the Appropriation Committee held
Friday evening, June 23, 1944, it was voted that the Appropria-
tion Committee transfer a sum up to $2,002.00 from the Reserve
