" <br /> Of thirty-nine recommendation - made by Captain Merchant <br /> many should have been accomplished in the daily routine of <br /> the fire department , the balance would have needed the approval <br /> of the voters . <br /> The Board of Selectmen and Public Works , acting as a. <br /> Board of Water Commissioners , have had an independent study <br /> made by Metcalf & Eday of the present and future needs not <br /> only for domestic but for fire purposes . <br /> They summarize this report as follows : <br /> REINFORCEMENT AND IMPROVEMENT OF THE LEXINGTON WATER WORKS <br /> "The conclusions of the Engineers of the Nev, England <br /> Insurance Exchange and those of Metcalf & Eddy , Engineers <br /> employed by the Board of Public Works to make a complete <br /> survey of the water system concur with respect to the inade- <br /> cuacy of our present supply of water for proper fire protection . <br /> " The Board of Public Works has already accepted the <br /> complete plane of Metcalf & Eddy entitled " Reinforcement and <br /> Improvement of the Lexington Water Works " as a guide for future <br /> extensions and improvements . borne progress has already been <br /> made in carrying out certain recommendations involving small <br /> expenditures of money . The Board has also adopted a tentative <br /> program which when completed will cover the first six recom- <br /> mendations in the report of Metcalf & Eddy . <br /> " These include a hook-up with the Arlington Water System <br /> in Westminster Avenue ; more cross connections wherever two <br /> lines of water pipe exist in the same street ; reconstruction of <br /> connections at the Venturi meter at the Arlington Line in <br /> Massachusetts Avenue ; extension of a 12 " pipe from the meter <br /> in Massachusetts Avenue up and across Liberty Heights and down <br /> Oak Street to laassachusetts Avenue , thence along the south side <br /> of the Avenue connecting with the 8 " main in k'ollen Road ; <br /> an extension of the present 1f2 " pipe in Massachusetts Avenue <br /> from Slocum Road to the Minute Man , thence in s' edford Street <br /> to Revere Street . This construction work to be spread over <br /> two years at a cost of approximately $78 , `'00 . 00 . A part of <br /> this cost to be taken out of Water Department earnings and the <br /> balance to be bonded over twenty years . <br /> " Other recommendations include a 12 " pipe extension in a <br /> proposed street from Rawson Avenue to Lowell Street ; 12 " pipe <br /> in Parker , Clarke and Forest Streets ; an 8 " pine in Muzzey <br /> Street ; a 12 " pipe from Massachusetts Avenue via Hayes Lane <br /> to the top of Granny Hill ; a 1 , 000 , 000 gallon standpipe on <br /> Granny dill ; a 12 " pipe from Massachusetts Avenue through Rindge <br /> Avenue extended to Rawson Avenue ; a 12" pipe from Forest Street <br /> through Vine Brook hoad , Winthrop Road Find Highland Avenue to <br /> Bloomfield Street , thence to Massachusetts Avenue through <br /> Bloomfield Street ; replacement of 4" pipe in Eustis Street , <br /> Percy Road , Warren Street and Pelham Road with 8 " pipe ; a <br /> 1.0 " pipe from MassachuE• etts Avenue through daple Street to <br /> Lowell Street . <br /> " Tne , complete program will cost approximately 4k76 , 030 . O0 <br /> but construction can be spread over many years . <br /> " Y"chile the necessity of a more adequate supply of water <br /> is essential from the fire protection point of view we must <br /> not lose sight of the fact that the growth of the town would <br /> soon compel the very improvements we are recommending in order <br /> to give the domestic users the supply and service for which <br /> they pay . <br />
