<br /> 7 - Responsibility of the Fire Department to our Board of
<br /> Selectmen or Public Works or any other board of our Town
<br /> Government .
<br /> 8 - The adequacy of our present eater system for proper fire
<br /> protection .
<br /> 9 - Finally , any and all matters necessary to provide an effi -
<br /> cient and ddequate fire department , consistent with our
<br /> ability to pay , and the fire insurance exchange requirements .
<br /> At a subsequent special town meeting held on June F'8 , 1928
<br /> $500 . 00 was appropriated for the expenses of this Committee .
<br /> Under date of May 8 , the Town Clerk advised that the Moder-
<br /> ator had under Article 4 appointed the following Committee : -

<br /> James G . Robertson
<br /> Albert B . Tenney
<br /> Under date of May 14 , the Committee met and organized as
<br /> follows : -
<br /> Albert B . Tenney , Chairman
<br /> James G . Robertson , Secretary
<br /> Since that date the Committee has held 17 regular meetings
<br /> and many conferences .
<br /> The Committee feels itself extremely fortunate in having
<br /> been able to secure the services of Peter E. Walsh , Esq . ,
<br /> Ex-Chief of the Boston Fire Department , whose training and exper-
<br /> ience well qualifies him as a practical fire-fighter , and a
<br /> competent advisor .
<br /> His services have been supplemented by the l' ew angland
<br /> Insurance Exchange , through its representatives Mr . P . C .
<br /> Charnock , Engineer , and Mr . W . H . Merchant , Assistant Engineer ,
<br /> formerly Captain in the New Bedford Fire Department .
<br /> In conjunction with these men , Metcalf & Eddy , expert
<br /> Water and Sewer Engineers have studied the water system for the
<br /> Board of Selectmen and Public Works ,
<br /> Acknowledgement of the valuable service rendered by these
<br /> men is herewith recorded , as well as that of Mr . Eugene C .
<br /> Hultman , Fire Commissioner of the City of Boston , Captain James W .
<br /> Ryan , Engineer of the motor apparatus of Boston , Mr . James T .
<br /> Ball , former consulting architect of the Boston Department ,
<br /> Mr . Edward H . Fenton, Acting Director of State Accounts , Mr . W . E .
<br /> Dorman , Counsel for the Massachusetts Senate , Mr . George C .
<br /> Neal , State Fire Marshal, Mr . W . S . Scamman of our Department
<br /> of Public Works , Mr . Ross of the Water Department , Mr . Gorman ,
<br /> Forest Warden, our Board of Engineers , Messrs . Buttrick, Hooper ,
<br /> and Taylor , Mr . George E . Robinson of Boston , an architect
<br /> skilled in the design of fire houses , Mr . Charles E . Beaudry
<br /> of our Town, who aided the Committee in making maps , Mr . Louis
<br /> Bills , Superintendent of Wires , Mr . Sydney R . Wrightington, Town
<br /> Counsel , the officials of the Arlington Fire Department , who
<br /> have rendered valuable service in training our fire department
<br /> since this inquiry started and Mr . H . P . Allen , who acted as
<br /> Clerk of the Committee .
<br /> The Committee in its work visited the fire departments in
<br /> the Towns of Billeric; , Danvers , Amesbury , Arlington , Ashland ,
<br /> Stoughton, and the City of Gloucester .
