The group is becoming very efficient.

Request for Bikeway use: Marita requested permission for Rising Star Quilters to place a
thth
sandwich board sign next to the bikeway on October 4 and 5. The group consensus was to
grant permission. Stew will ask the Selectmen for permission to use the lawn by the Visitors
th
Center for our October 5 Hall-of-Fame Celebration.

Bikeway Maintenance: Stew, will schedule a DPW ride to determine maintenance needs. Prior
to that we will ride the path to set priorities.

nd
Bike Friday Commuter Rides: The next group ride will be on August 22 beginning at
Hancock Street and going into Boston.

Meeting adjourned.

Record of Friends of Lexington Bikeways discussions.

Treasurer’s Report: Rich reported current balance is $1613.68

Paper Streets: Marita and Peggy met with Gerry Rhodes, Lexington Building Inspector.
He recommended we research the deeds of the abutters of the paper streets to see if any
fees were paid for transfer of the paper streets to the landowners. Peggy, Stew, and
Marita will go to the registry and then ask the selectmen to ask town counsel to review
our research to determine ownership. The Sidewalk Committee agreed to co-sponsor our
future petition for access to paper streets.

Hall-of-Fame Celebration:
October 5, 2008. The rolling celebration will begin in
Cambridge at noon and proceed westward at appropriate intervals. Founders of the
Bikeway will be honored. There will be on-going activities in each of the four towns,
Cambridge, Arlington, Lexington, and Bedford. Peggy will coordinate fundraising. Jack
Johnson will do the press releases. Stew will contact the Cycle Loft and request use of
the Farmers’ Market tents. Chris, Marita, Stew, and Peggy will meet prior to our next
meeting to discuss the format. Many ideas were floated including:
Penny-farthing photos, music, historic photographs, Minuteman Quiz, Children’s Bike
ride by Carolyn Siccama, book signing by Carolyn Siccama. Anticipated expenses to

date are: $76.00 for bookmarks, $175 for a 3’ x 10’ banner, and $62.00 for lawn signs.

Bike Commuting Forum.
We reviewed Laurel Carpenter’s plans to hold a forum
which will promote bike commuting.
