APPROVED MEETING MINUTES
Committee Name: Lexington Bicycle Advisory Committee
Date, Time, and Location: April 12, 2012, Rm. 111, Town Hall
Members Present: Stew Kennedy (Acting Chair), John Frey, Bob Hausslein (Fol-B
Chair), Mike Tabaczynski, George Gagliardi, Marita Hartshorn, Sandra Shaw
(Recreation Committee Liaison), and Jerry Van Hook.
Members Absent: Peggy Enders, Laurel Carpenter
Minutes: The March minutes were accepted as distributed.
Center Streetscape and Bike Parking on Mass Ave: Town meeting on April 11 t"
approved money for the streetscape design in Lexington Center including money for a
traffic study. It is not clear what portion of the money is for the traffic study and what
portion for design. The economic development officer is working to obtain approval
from various town committees to install a summer weekend bike corral in a parking
space in front of Ride Studio Cafe.
DCR Grant for Minuteman Bikeway User Information: The town received two
proposals for the DCR grant for design of signage and other amenities along the
bikeway. Representatives from the bike committees in Lexington (Peggy Enders),
Bedford (Terry Gleason), and Arlington (Joey Glushko), working with John Livsey and
Dave Pinsonneault, selected Toole Design Group.
Plans for Bikeway Drainage and Root Control: The contractor continues to do good
work on drainage problems. Root barriers have not yet begun. General resurfacing
will wait for 2013.
Bicycle Safety Awareness Week (April 22 -29): The committee developed the
following slogans to be displayed during the week on the Police Department message
boards:

Bob will ask Dr. Palant if he'd be interested in writing an article for the Minuteman for
Bicycle Safety Week.
Land Gift (between Bikeway and Munroe Cemetery): The town accepted the sliver of
land between Monroe Cemetery and the Bikeway with no conditions
Other Business:
• Funded by Traffic Demand Management money from Shire the town has begun
improving Hayden Ave. by installing a sidewalk on the north side and reducing
car travel to one lane each way (except where a left turn lane is needed for the
turn to the Route 2 on -ramp.
• Judy Crocker's Town Meeting article to reduce school bus fees was approved by
town meeting.
• Marita reminded members to send information about interesting things to see
along the bikeway to Mary Gillespie.
Discussions of the Friends of Lexington Bikeways
FoLB Annual Meeting: Bob collected dues from members. All officers were re-
elected. George was elected as auditor, a new position this year.
Mass Bike is planning their annual MassBike Century and Family Rides on July
28th originating from Lexington High School, the routes yet to be determined.
The Friends of Lexington Bikeways and Ride. Studio. Cafe are offering two bike rides
on May 19 leaving from RSC. This event is part of the month of Revolutionary
Revelry. Laurel will lead one and Stew the other. Jerry and George will help and Ride
Studio Cafe will provide sweeps.

All sections are covered by volunteers from the Bicycle Advisory Committee for our
Spring Clean up on May 5 Bring small trash bags for volunteers and a large one or
two to collect the smalls ones in, and notify Bob where you left them. Bob will put two
notices in the Minuteman and send an e-mail blast.
We plan to again collect bikes for Bikes Not Bombs on Discovery Day. We need to get
space, advertise, and get volunteers. Currently the town collects used bike all year
long. Sandra will get details about the town bike collection efforts. Sandra will again do
advertising.
Bike to Farmers Market Days are June 121, July 10, August 7, October 16, and either
September 4 or 18. There was some interest expressed to ask to have the new
permanent bike rack moved to the other end of the lawn so as to be closer to the bike
path.

• Farmers' Market Bike Corrals: Tuesdays, June 12 and July 10, August 7, and
October 16, 2 pm to 6:30 pm. Volunteers needed!
