A review of the design of the new Estabrook elementary school was presented by engineers. Here is a list of some of the aspects of the design mentioned. 1) It's a 3- storey building. Older students will occupy higher storeys. 2) Goal is to improve over the stretch code and meet Leed Silver which will increase costs. However meeting Leed silver results in an additional 2% reimbursement which is a saving of $700000. 3) Building will be heated by natural gas. Condensing boilers will be used. 4) Classroom ventilation is another big energy user. Energy wheel will transfer energy from exhaust air to incoming air. 5) Entire building will be air - conditioned. The claim was made that Estabrook is a 12 -month building and hence it requires AC. The engineers claimed that solar panels in the roof don't make sense — direct sunlight lighting of the gym is going to save more electricity than the solar panels would generate. A motion was passed to ask a question to the School Committee how the decision for AC was taken in Estabrook school — there are two former members of the school committee in ECC and they recall discussions not to have AC in 10 -month schools.
