HomeMy WebLinkAbout2011-01-05-BLT-minCARY MEMORIAL LIBRARY BOARD OF LIBRARY TRUSTEES Wednesday, January 5, 2011 5:00 PM Learning Center Attendees: Norman Cohen, Mary Ann Stewart, Howard Jaffe, Helen Cohen, Hank Manz, Margaret Coppe, Peter Kelley, Trustees; Kathy Quinlan, Assistant Library Director; Steve Krensky, Advisory Committee and Jeanne Krieger, Library Director Search Committee Chair. Call to Order: Norman called the meeting to order at 5:08 PM Secretary's Minutes: Mary Ann Stewart made a motion to approve the minutes of the October 20, 2010 Board of Library Trustees Meeting. Helen Cohen seconded the motion. The motion passed. Financial Report: Kathy Quinlan highlighted financial reports. • We are on track at the halfway point in the fiscal year. • Salary expenditures are less than last year's due to the deferral of filling vacant positions per the Town Manager. Administration Report: Kathy presented the Administration Report: • Our new commons area in the former Large Print Area opened up on December 10, 2010. • We are having a soft opening as the area is being discovered by patrons • No food is allowed , only covered beverages • This month we are starting to add student art to the gallery created in the commons area. We are working with Sean Hagan of the LHS Art Department to coordinate student artwork for display. • Holiday Festival Night was a success. We had lots of people taking advantage of the refreshments and music. We sold over $300 in bookplate materials and raised $300 from the Friends Silent Auction Gift Baskets. • The Final Health and Wellness Lecture in November by Dr. Thomas Perls on" Living to 100" was well attended. There was no report from the Friends or Foundation Jeanne Krieger thanked everyone on behalf of the Foundation for their support. Jeanne has been helping process donations from the recent Foundation campaign. The proceeds are coming in and so far look promising. New Business: Norman welcomed Jeanne Krieger, chairperson of the Library Director Search Committee. Jeanne gave an overview of the process: • The Committee received more than 40 applications • They selected 5 candidates to interview. Two candidates were selected to attend a public meeting on December 8, 2010. One candidate backed out. • Jeanne summarized the education and work experience of the final candidate: Koren Stembridge. Kathy highlighted Koren's presentation at Cary Library on December 8, 2010. Jeanne stated that the Search Committee enthusiastically and unanimously voted to bring Koren Stembridge forward to the Board of Library Trustees for a vote to offer her the position of Library Director. After discussion, Howard Jaffe made a motion to offer the position of Library Director to Koren Stembridge. Helen Cohen seconded the position. The motion passed. Norm mentioned that Koren will become one of the Senior Management Team members. Carl Valente, the Town Manager will negotiate a contract with her. It is estimated that her start date will be March 1, 2011. Nomination Committee: A 3 person Nominating Committee was selected: Hank Manz as chair, Margaret Coppe and Helen Cohen. The Committee will recommend a slate for the Executive Committee. The vote will take place at the March 16, 2011 Full Board Meeting. A motion was made by Helen Cohen to adjourn the meeting. The motion was seconded by Howard Jaffe. Meeting adjourned at 6:35 PM
