interest in helping veterans engage with the Town Celebrations Committee and
community.
Veterans’ Day 2011 updates
Invitations have been mailed and all approvals for the day are in.
Jim Shaw presented the name of a nominee for chief marshal. A motion was
made and accepted to invite his suggestion to serve.
All groups have been invited.
Wreaths were ordered.
Temple Isaiah’s Rabbi Howard Jaffe will be the clergy representative. Mary
Gillespie and Dick Crogan will be available to welcome the rabbi at the green.

Sandy Podgorski will pick up the flowers from Wilson Farm for distribution to the
veterans.
Suzie will check with Sondra Lucente regarding publicity.
The Fitzgerald Award will be presented at this event.
Essay contest and veterans’ thank you cards
More than seventy-five contest entries were received. Mary was pleased
with the essays (though there were no entries from Clarke Middle School
this year) and found that most students wrote on the second option,
Thank you for your service.
A motion was made and accepted to accept the essay subcommittee’s
recommendation of Eva McDermott (Diamond Middle School) and Abby
Grant (Lexington High School) as the two winning choices.
Committee discussion ensued regarding what sort of recognition should
be done for the student winners.
It was suggested that two books of essays be prepared – one for Cary
Library, and the other given to Don Martin for the veterans. Mary will
talk with the library staff to ask how they might publicize the essay
winners.
As many as three classes at Bridge School will make thank you cards to
give to the veterans at the green. Mary has prepared a permission letter
allowing for the distribution of the children’s work.
Patriots’ Day 2012
Status of the town website and its ability to accept parade applications online is
still undetermined.
A motion was made and accepted to have Youth Commission representatives
serve both as chief marshal for the morning parade and as masters of ceremony
at the green.
A motion was made and accepted to send a letter to the middle school band
director inviting the children to play a selection at the youth ceremony.
Meeting adjourned at 8:50 pm.
Respectfully submitted by Sandy Podgorski
