Meeting Began: 7:50 a.m. Edits were made to the August meeting minutes, which will be corrected for next time. Membership changes: After Greg Zurlo was welcomed as the new liaison from the Planning Board, he commented that 2020 Vision is the oil that keeps things going. Ann Redmon's term has expired. Focus Groups: • Dan reported on the Chamber focus group that was held yesterday morning. • The Committee still hopes to schedule focus groups with LHS PTSA, LexFun, and TMMA Executive Committee. • There was agreement that the Committee will complete all focus groups by the November Committee meeting. We will then send a summary of all the input out to participants from all groups. • Input from the focus groups will be incorporated into the goals. These groups were not intended to be completely representative of the community, but their discussions are useful to re- stimulate thinking and probably capture the community's major goals. Next steps for 2020 Vision: • Dan reported on a conversation with Carl Valente about the Somerstat program. Somerville's Mayor uses this program to monitor performance of city operations using quantitative measures. Carl is going to check with his contacts in other municipalities to see what might apply to Lexington, recognizing that our charter and governmental culture are significantly different from Somerville's. • There was discussion about developing a townwide survey early in 2012 to re- validate the goals and identify current community priorities and degree of interest in different goals. • After reviewing the survey done in 2001 by Mercer Management, it was suggested that we piggyback closely on those questions, since they were developed by experts. This would also provide comparisons between community sentiments then and now. • Methods for distributing the survey and collecting responses were discussed, and everyone agreed this needs to be thought through carefully. We should consider electronic survey tools that would both collect and analyze the data. • Committee members would like to discuss this project with Carl Valente, particularly around the cost issue. Meeting Adjourned: 9:05 a.m. Future meeting schedule: (all at 7:45 a.m. in the Selectmen's Meeting Room) Thursday, October 13 Friday, November 18 Thursday, December 15
