Town Engineer, Police Captain Manuel Ferro, and Gail Wagner, Transportation Services. The Traffic Safety Advisory Committee met on December 15, 2010 to discuss the following issues brought before us: Pedestrian Safety In light of the most recent pedestrian fatality on Worthen Road, a global safety approach was encouraged by the Asst. Town Manager, Linda Vine, in a meeting with Captain Ferro. Police enforcement can only do so much and is often viewed as a "negative enforcement." A comprehensive plan unifying engineering, education and enforcement is sought. TSAC felt it can contribute to this effort. It was suggested that a crosswalk inventory map be developed. Each crosswalk should be analyzed for location, street lighting, MBTA stop placement, and pedestrian crash data. In addition to assessment of existing crosswalks, criteria to guide placement of new crosswalks is desired. All new crosswalks should be approved by Police and Engineering Departments. Bill Hadley, Dept of Public Works Director, will be meeting with Engineering, Highway and Police to discuss crosswalk program improvements. Worthen Road Crosswalk Assessment In Spring 2011, Worthen Road is scheduled for repaving. Crosswalk placement is being evaluated by a consultant and a new crosswalk is likely to be added near the Worthen Road entrance to Stop and Shop. Re- structuring the pedestrian cycle at the traffic signal at Worthen Road and Bedford Street is also anticipated. Militia Road off Worthen Road will be part of the consultant review to evaluate the merits of changing this bi- directional road into a one -way configuration. If change is recommended, it would require Selectmen approval
