Doodle. She will let us know which dates have been deemed the best.
Member/liaison reports:
Marilyn Campbell: Sudbury(population 17,700) Community Center(CC)
Teen programs: CC is made out of an old school. Had a teen entry, black room with the purple ceiling..
Didn't work because the kids didn't do it themselves. Doing something they wanted in a building that
was proscribed for them didn't work either.
Every other Friday or every fourth Friday evening teen area is turned over to teens. 400 kids show up.
Dancing, arcade, can chat in a room with furniture, play games in arcade. Have run of whole place.
Takes a lot of staff but the kids definitely come and like it. Not always the same kids. $8/$10 a
membership event. Lock-in. Stay until 10pm,may not leave earlier. Whole CC staff shows up to
supervise on those evenings. What kinds of kids show up,can they characterize? Different kids show up
each time.

Community Center Task Force
After school programs for middle school students are at the CC not in schools.
This CC/teen area is Not a drop in center. Tried a drop in center but it didn't work. They told the kids to
come repaint the room, make it their own,but the kids didn't want to. Perhaps the place looks too much
like a school to them, and it keeps them away.
Schools don't have dances any more, schools rely on CC to do them. There is no counseling center for
teens in Sudbury.
Recommendation of Sudbury staff is that you need to keep counseling and kid activities separate,so that a
kid using counseling is not conspicuously going there.
Jim Goell,Foster City, CA.
New town since WWII. No HS,but have elem and MS. Has a town center but no stores there. Stores are® Formatted: Normal
out on strip malls. Houses start at about$800,000. The CC has a senior wing and a youth center next
door,7th to 12th grade. Library is also like a CC with rooms to rent out,a room with a stage for couple of
hundred people. Run by parks and recreation but he found no evidence of human services. They also Deleted: Mix of general areas
have a Jewish CC that is really a great sports center. general discussion: ,and segregated areas ¶
These places are all very interesting, and all very different. What is IT that the community wants? IT is
different in each community,it is shaped by the community itself. We have to create our own IT. Is
there something that this community could get so excited about that it invigorates a movement? We
decided not to do any more site visits and to now focus our energies on collecting data from Lexington
stakeholders. Will have to define how that will happen and when.
The Community Conversation(LWV event,Sep.27)will be critical for us. How do we want to get
information from it? What information do we want to take to it? This is a great opportunity for CCTF!
Laura will attend next meeting on September 8 if possible.
Adjourned at 9:15 with a motion by Lisah Rhodes, second by Jim Goell. Next meeting is TBD by
Doodle survey from Lisah.
