Minutes
: The May 2011 minutes were accepted.
Selectmen Annual Goal Setting:
The committee has been formally solicited for
its input for the Selectmen’s annual goal setting session. Members agreed to
recommend to the Selectmen that a) the Town should strive to become a more
bike-friendly town; 2) that doing so would advance bike-related tourism and
economic development; and 3) that the Town should invest more resources in
improving bicycle transportation facilities generally, both in terms of shared-used
paths and “complete streets.” A document outlining these recommendations will
be forwarded to the Selectmen in time for their June 28 meeting.
Plans for Bikeway Drainage and Root Control
(Update) Peggy shared a memo
from John Livsey describing delays on the CPA Bikeway project associated with
the discussions at the Conservation Commission. Stew talked about some of the
issues associated with the delay. The committee directed Peggy to contact John
Livsey to express its hope that the work was completed by winter.
Bikeway Intersection Safety Upgrades
(Update) The committee asked again
about the proposed new bollards and how the bollards will join at the ground level.
Peggy agreed to write the DPW again and ask about the bollards and whether
they can be removed during plowing and to send the committee pictures of the
same bollards on the Bruce Freeman Trail. There was no other information about
intersection upgrade plans.
Other business:
…A member mentioned that there is a trash can at Camillia Way with the “no
riding on sidewalks” sign on it.
Record of the Discussions of Friends of Lexington Bikeways
Treasurer’s report:
Bob Hausslein was not present to report, but sent a note
saying, “there is $9672.30 total between our new account at Cambridge Savings
and what is in the town account.”
Bikeway Counts
: Margaret Stebbins reported that the count on Saturday, May 14,
went well, although it was a chilly and cloudy day. A total of 2,585 trips were
counted during the 12-hour period, including 1,826 cyclists. The Tuesday count
was cancelled.
Community Bike Rides
(Saturday, May 14): Laurel led the morning ride, and
Stew the afternoon ride. Laurel put together a history of the ride as well as a cue
sheet. There were close to 25 riders and much enthusiasm. Parking outside of
Ride.Studio.Cafe worked very well.
Bike Donation Day/Discovery Day
(Saturday, May 28) 128 bikes were donated,
as well as a bunch of bike parts. Members agreed that it was a worthwhile project
and will repeat it next year.
Bike Corral at the Farmers’ Market:
Members voted to contribute another $100
to the coupon effort (bringing the FoLB contribution to $200, with the Farmers’
Market staying at $100). The first market corral will be on June 14, followed by
one on July 12.
Garlic Mustard Pull on the Bikeway:
Stew reported that there were seven
leaders from FoLB, and 60 volunteers from Grace Chapel. They pulled weeds
between 1 and 4 pm, yielding about 80 trash bags. The area covered was shorter,
and the goal was to get all of the garlic mustard pulled up from between Revere
Street and Woburn Street.
Bike Racks at Businesses:
Jerry reported that Ace Hardware has decided not to
purchase a full rack, they offered to pay half if FoLB would pay the other half.
Members declined to do this, and suggested that a better spot for a full rack would
be in the mall across from Ace Hardware. Jerry also talked about his discussions
with the TriCon Sports owner, and said that there are no bike racks at the Great
Road Shopping Center (where there is one owner of the entire complex).
The meeting was adjourned at 8:45 pm.
