HomeMy WebLinkAbout2006-03-09-COA-minCOUNCIL ON AGING Meeting, Tuesday, March 9, 2006 Attending were; Shirley Buck Marian Cohen, Chairperson Bob Edwards Leo McSweeney Frieda Oliner Nick Santosuosso Jane Trudeau Lauren McSweeney, Executive Director Tom Griffiths, School Committee Liaison More than a dozen guests from the Senior Advocates group Minutes of the the February meeting were approved. Status of Munroe School site Richard Pagett reported that the BOS has appointed a new committee composed of the Town Manager and representatives of the Munroe Center for the ARTS to discuss their mutual needs and responsibilities regarding the upkeep of Munroe School. Tom Griffiths suggested that the fire and building inspectors assess what needs to be done. Given the uncertain status of Munroe School, it was decided to postpone ARTICLE 36 until the Fall when it is expected the BOS will have made a decision as to the disposition of the school. Richard noted that the MCFA had mobilized a large group to oppose the use of Munroe as a Senior Center. Marian noted that the Seniors need to mobilize, as well, She suggested forming a Public Relations sub - committee. Richard reminded the Committee that before each BOS meeting there is an open comment period and suggested the seniors take advantage of the opportunity to speak out on the shortcomings of our present site. Senior Advocates Formed Marnie Terzian, Jean Lee, Barbara Parker, and John Fedorochko announced the formation of a new group, the Senior Advocates to work for a new Senior Center. In response to their inquiries regarding various proposed Senior Center sites including Worthen Road, Marian Cohen will put copies of the Senior Action Plan Committee report that reviewed the various sites studied in the Senior Center library and at Cary Library. Because of the formation of this new group, Marian suggested we postpone forming a public relations subcommittee. COA fundraiser A home health care company is underwriting the costs of a fundraiser featuring a swing dance band, "Bombay Jim and the Swingin' Sapphires" at the Museum of Our National Heritage on June 16, 2006 at 7:30 p.m. Next meeting is scheduled for April 11, 2006 at 3:30 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Jane Trudeau
