Update on White House proposal for a new Senior Center
Paul Lapointe reported that he, Lauren McSweeney, Leo McSweeney, and Marian Cohen had met with the
Historical District Commission to discuss the conversion of the White House into a Senior Center, The
HDC will not permit the entire building to be demolished, but they were agreeable to it being moved
forward and lowered.
Peter Kelley is now enthusiastic about building a Senior Center on a residential scale using the White
House,
The Appropriations Committee has voted 8 -1 to release the Thirty -Five Thousand ($35,000.00) dollars
appropriated to fund a study of the White House site for a Senior Center,
Marilyn Fell of the CPA Committee assures us that funds would be available for converting the White
House into a Senior Center.
The CEC has not yet voted on release of the Thirty-Five Thousand ($35,000.00) dollars. Paul believes that
we are in a good position to proceed.
Paul Lapointe commented that since the Thirty -Five Thousand ($35,000.00) dollars has already been
appropriated, we do not need Town Meeting approval to spend it. However, the consensus of the COA was
that in the interests of transparency and obtaining Town Meeting approval to use the White House for a
Senior Center, a now affirmative vote is important.
