A meeting of the Recreation Committee was held on Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at 7:00 p.m, in Estabrook
Hall of the Cary Hall Building, 1605 Massachusetts Avenue. A quorum of 4 was present.
Members Present: Sandra Shaw, Wendy Rudner, Lisah Rhodes, and Howard Vogel
Members Absent: Rick DeAngelis
Staff Present: Karen Simmons, Director of Recreation, David Pinsonneault, DPW Manager of
Operations, Chris Filadoro, Superintendent of Public Grounds, and Sheila Butts,
Assistant Director of Recreation
Others Present:
The Recreation Committee meeting began at 7:05 p.m. The meeting acted on the following items:
1. Citizens and Other Boards —None
2. Meeting Minutes from May 18, 2011
Wendy Rudner asked for clarification of the Clarke sidewalk project, which Karen Simmons
provided.
Howard Vogel moved and Wendy Rudner seconded acceptance of the Recreation Committee
Meeting Minutes of May 18, 2011 as written.
The motion was approved by a vote of 3 — 0.
3. Liaison Reports
• Howard Vogel reported on the Greenway Corridor Committee. The Committee met on
May 23` to walk the proposed sites. No decision has been made as to the direction the
committee should take in the future regarding the Greenway Corridor. They are meeting
again next week, and Mr. Vogel hopes to provide additional information at the July or
August Recreation Committee meeting.
• Sandra Shaw reported that on June 4` 60 youth from Grace Chapel met to clean up along
the Minuteman Bikeway.
• Wendy Rudner, liaison to the Lincoln Park Subcommittee reported that she had hand -
delivered copies of the LPSC meeting minutes to Recreation Committee members, since
she was unavailable for the May Recreation Committee meeting.
• Karen Simmons reported to the members that the Lincoln Park Bathroom project has
resurfaced and may become a reality soon. The Lions Club through Dick Perry is

accepting donations for the bathroom project. Wendy Rudner reported that the Lincoln
Park Subcommittee has allocated $75,000 towards the building, but not in one lump sum.
4. Committee Organization — Chairman and Vice Chairman
The Recreation Committee tabled discussion of this agenda item until the July meeting.
5. Introduction on New Superintendent of Public Grounds — Chris Filadoro
Dave Pinsonneault introduced Chris Filadoro, who replaces Dave as the Superintendent of Public
Grounds. Mr. Filadoro comes to Lexington from the private sector, most recently as an employee
of Turf Links Environmental,
6. Recreation Office Move
Karen Simmons reported that the Recreation Department will move back to its renovated space
on the second floor of the Town Office Building on Monday, June 20. The office will close at
noon on Friday, June 17 and remain closed through Monday, June 20, reopening at 8:30 a.m.
Tuesday, June 21 The Tennis Booth, located at the Town Pool Building will serve as a
temporary office for all residents who have business with the department. It will be staffed
Friday, June 17 from 12:00 noon to 4:30 p.m. and all day on Monday, June 20. Relocation and
office closure information has been sent via email to all Recreation customers, The information
has also been posted on the Town and Recreation website, the Lexington Patch and the Lexington
Minuteman websites, and sent to all EGov Recreation subscribers.
7. Busa Farm Update
The Board of Selectmen, members of the Busa Land Use Proposal Committee and members of
the Recreation Committee toured the Busa Farm site on June 13 @ 5:00. Karen Simmons
reported that she had posted an official meeting notice with the Town. Clerk's Office since more
than 2 members of the Recreation Committee indicated they would attend the tour. Minutes of
the meeting will be written and distributed.
8. Parks Report
David Pinsonneault, Operation Manager for the Department of Public Works, reported on the
following:
• Phase one of the Center Playfields Drainage Project will begin in mid - August.
• Plans, specifications and design contract infonnation for Phase two of the Center
Drainage Project was delivered to the Department of Public Works for review. The bid
documents should be available this summer. Mr. Pinsonneault is hopeful that the project
can begin after the 2011 High School football season is completed.
• Dave will submit Phase Three of the Center Drainage Project to the CPC for their -
consideration in the FY 2013 Budget.
• The Franklin Capital Improvement Project approved at the 2011 Town Meeting is
targeted to begin in the fall.
• An informational meeting, facilitated by Town Engineer, John Livsey, has been
scheduled for July 12, 2011 at 4:00 p.m. to review the Old Reservoir Stormwater
Mitigation Project with neighbors. The Recreation Department has mailed notice of the
July 12 meeting to abutters and neighbors of the Old Reservoir. The list was generated
by the Town Assessors Office.
• The Facilities Department has released $15,000 from the Fiske School Project to re -build
the Fiske Little League Backstop which was not built to standards during the school
construction project.

Mr. Pinsonneault is working with Wes Worth (Landscape consultant for the Lincoln Park
Subcommittee) to redesign the landscaping in the Lincoln Park parking lot.
Sandra Shaw asked if the soccer field at the Adams Playground was full sized or
intermediate sized. The field, although used by the Waldorf School for soccer matches,
is listed as an Intermediate sized field in Recreation inventory. Karen Simmons indicated
that Peter Coleman and Chris Filadoro will update the existing inventory of fields with
actual dimensions and uses. The new survey will also note which fields overlap, and
therefore cannot be used for more than one sport at a time.
9. Recreation Report
Karen Simmons, Director of Recreation, reported on the following:
• The USGA Turf Advisory Report was distributed to Recreation Committee members.
• Revenue at the Pine Meadows Golf Course is up 2 %, but rounds of golf are down
compared to 2010.
• The Lexington Rotary Club is donating $1,000 to the Lexington Recreation Department
Scholarship Fund, Ms. Simmons will attend the Rotary Club meeting on June 27` to
formally accept the generous donation on behalf of the Town.
• The Facilities Department is assisting with the Pool Renovation Project. A pre bid walk
through of the facility will be held on June 17.
• Due to the hard winter, the skylights at the Town Pool Building have suffered damage.
The Department is in the process of obtaining additional cost quotes for repairs.
• Ms. Simmons met with Ben Aronson of the Lexington Minuteman recently to discuss an
article he is writing on the impact of the economy on recreation and Recreation budgets
in the area.
• The Parks and Playground Regulations were distributed to the committee. The Police
Department has requested that the Board of Selectmen codify the regulations. Recreation
Committee members will review the regulations and send their comments to Karen
Simmons within the next couple of weeks.
10. Other Reports
• The next meeting of the Recreation Committee will be held on Wednesday, July 20,
2011 at 5:45 p.m. at the Pine Meadows golf Course.
The June 15, 2011 meeting of the Recreation Committee adjourned at 7:50 p.m.
