HomeMy WebLinkAbout2005-01-11-YSC-min Our latest meeting was held on January 11, 2005 and in attendance were Jennifer, Bill B , Amy, Julia, Beth, and Becky Jennifer began the meeting with information about the Teen-Adult Dialogue nights put on by Julie Fenn and Beth Mintz. The middle school student-parent dialogue night is this Wednesday(tonight) 7-9pm, in Clarke's cafeteria. Anyone and everyone is encouraged to show up There will also be a community-teen dialogue night on March 23rd 7-9pm at Cary Library This will provide an opportunity for high school students and community members/leaders to share and exchange ideas about youth needs. Jennifer also shared an informational resource guide put together back in 2001 by Concord-Carlisle Action Committee for Teens. We talked about how resource development/guide is pertinent and a needed resource that this council will think about. There are ideas to have kids or parents involved. We will revisit at a later time I announced that Julia was accepted to CT College---early acceptance000 Yeah!! She is quite relieved. As far as follow-ups from our last meeting Bill K. is working with Dawn to set up a meeting with the manager of Lex Flick. Our hope is that we will be able to rent out one theater on a half-day for middle school students. And about a week ago I exchanged e- mail with Helen C and she was going to try to get in touch with Diamond school. An update on my position there has been an increase in referrals from school nurses, even in elementary to guidance counselors, and school deans Issues have centered around after-school programming, clinical needs and services, housing, adolescents release from acute hospitalization with no services in place. There have been clear and obvious gaps filled. for instance, bridging the gap between the school professionals' limits and a families needs in regards to advocacy and case management. Out of this even lengthier discussion Amy begin to address issues around liability and protection. There is question about whether the Town has liability insurance and if I would be covered under that? Bill B will be inquiring about this question as he is meeting with Lauren tomorrow Bill B also shared briefly an earlier conversation with her about concerns about my accessibility regarding location in the Senior Center and difficulty getting through via telephone. I mentioned to the group that I am supposed to be getting a separate phone line. I then announced that this Friday is Michael Novack's last day in the department as he is moving on to another job What this means we had three social workers and we will be down to one until there are replacements and I will need to be taking on more responsibilities Everyone spoke up around protection of my position and role in the community We talked about the newness of the position and it being in the beginning stages, fear that fob description will get lost. Bill. B mentioned concerns about the economic climate in Lexington, which could have implications on the hiring process, for instance, might only one social work position be filled and how quickly We talked about the support that can be provided to the social service department. Jennifer spoke about the need to publicize my position, writing a small piece on my position, what is happening , and the need as it ties into the recent results from YRBS These discussions didn't allow time for forum and middle school sub-committee updates or goal establishment. We will revisit both in our next meeting on February 8, 2005 2 30-3 30pm, same place I look forward to seeing everyone then or before. Take care of yourselves, stay warm and healthy Becky
