In attendance were Helen Cohen, Lauren MacNeil, Bill Blout, Beth Ribeiro,
Norman Cohen, Christina Demambro, Becky Rushford, and Amy Berger
The group began by reviewing the mission, membership, and goals '05-'06
Becky has exchanged messages with Rabbi Jaffe regarding adding a member
from the interfaith clergy association to our council Updated since our
meeting Reverend Bill Clarke will be sitting on our council starting in
September Lauren will pursue conversation with superintendent before end of
school year regarding buy-in to possible middle school guidance slot, needing a
high school guidance counselor, and second high school student. The group
spoke about adding a community member slot and possibly a representative
from the PTSA even blending the two Questions were raised about the
process, who picks, and do they meet with the entire group before selection?
The group entertained the idea of adding middle students to the council and then
decided we have started in a good place by making four students part of the
middle school outreach initiative Beth said we could easily have focus groups
arranged at the schools to get students input.
Becky addressed sharing responsibility around taking minutes It is difficult to
both facilitate and take minutes The group decided that starting in September
we will rotate as we will not be meeting as a large group over the summer
However, the council's smaller working groups will meet and carry out tasks over
the summer
Beth and Becky also spoke about the importance of member's role as liaisons to
other committees or affiliations Beth spoke about information from our meetings
not getting translated and brought back to guidance counselors and other staff at
school Communication outside of our group is key Beth also spoke about
summer being a great time to meet with school administration folks, deans,
principals, etc
The Forum Committee announced our third forum June 15th, to include
therapists, psychiatrists, and also school professional staff; for instance,
guidance counselors and social workers It will be an opportunity to collaborate,
share, and unravel structural, systemic issues related to youth and mental health
needs among Lexington students Everyone is welcome to attend!!
The Half-Day Middle Committee shared information about it's last
meeting planning another middle school initiative in Fall '05 To Kimball's
Farm mini golf, bumper boats, and ice cream The major issues will center
around funding through community support and collaborative efforts from the
schools and town departments
The group has decided to not meet as a whole over the summer The smaller
working groups will continue to meet to plan outreach initiatives and forward
movement on the youth services network.
The next Youth Services Council meeting will be September 13th from 3-
4pm at The Lexington Senior Center Please mark your calendars And if
you can't attend the meeting please let me know
