Members Present: Stew Kennedy (Acting Chair), John Frey, Marita Hartshorn, Jerry Van Hook, Bob Hausslein (FoLB Chair), Richard Canale (Planning Board Liaison), Sandra Shaw (Recreation Committee Liaison), Laurel Carpenter Others Present: Philip Posner, Peter Brooks, Richard Spencer Members Absent: George Gagliardi, Mike Tabaczynski, Peter Kelley (Selectmen’s Liaison), Peggy Enders (Chair). Minutes : The April 2011 minutes were accepted as corrected. MassBike plans for Summer Century and Family Ride (Philip Posner). July 30, Lexington High School. Peggy has agreed to be the liaison between MassBike and the town. Included in the different rides planned will be a 12-mile family ride within Lexington. Laurel will help Philip and Peter determine the route. Clear signs are important as well as cue sheets with mileage indications on them. The LBAC voted to support this event and Peggy should convey this to the selectmen. Plans for Bikeway Drainage and Root Control (Update) Town Engineering Division recently presented the bikeway restoration plans to the Conservation Commission. The hearing will be continued. Locations to receive drainage improvements are: adjacent to the DPW Compost Facility; between the two crossings of North Lexington Brook beneath the bikeway near Revere Street; between the Maple Street bridge and Tower Park; and behind the group of businesses west of Bow Street. Root control will follow. Bikeway Intersection Safety Upgrades (Update) Tabled until June. Other business: …A German Company has published a new magazine called “Cyclingmobility.” …Grant applications for the Scenic Byway are due May 23. Ideas include a web page, brochures, maps, interactive displays and kiosks. The Conservation Stewards have a kiosk prototype, which costs approximately $500 for materials. Stew will send specifications to Richard Canale. Locations for kiosks may include Alewife, Arlington Center, Season’s Four, the Depot, the Visitor’s Center. …Laurel questions the wisdom of installing granite curbs perpendicular to the street in front of Luongo’s Farm as it poses a hazard to cyclists. Record of the Discussions of Friends of Lexington Bikeways Treasurer’s report: $10,573.16 Progress on Incorporation: Bob is working on paperwork to apply for 501c(3) status. Bikeway Cleanup: The clean up went well. The DPW picked up the trash left at various locations. Most litter was collected, pruning was extensive. Garlic mustard is still prevalent. Bikeway Counts : Margaret Stebbins is organizing volunteers for May 14 and May 17. Community Bike Rides (Saturday, May 14): Laurel has been working with Ride Studio Café on the route and cue sheet. Laurel is leading the 10:00 a.m. ride and will show conservation maps at each site on the route. Stew is leading the 2:00 p.m. ride. Both are within Lexington. Bike Donation Day/Discovery Day (Saturday, May 28) Peggy put together a flyer and Bob, Sandra, and Mary are currently distributing it. Peggy sent out a call for volunteers to help with the donations as well as sit at the Discovery Day booth. Donation location: the 14 Muzzey Street Parking Lot. Bay State Bike Week (May 14 – 20) Other business: …Bob learned that liability insurance for FoLB Inc. would cost between $1,000 and $2,000/year. We were advised always to have participants sign waivers for events and always get insured contractors for work done. …The Grace Chapel Garlic Mustard pull is Sunday, June 5 from 1:00 to 4:00. We will meet behind the center fire station. Captains are: Peggy, Stew, Marita, Jerry, Sandra, Richard Canale, and Bob. …In response to the town’s goal setting initiative, Jerry proposed we begin to look into a bike rental program similar to the one Boston has begun. …Richard suggested that, as part of the Selectmen’s goal setting initiative, we urge that Lexington aspire to become a world-class bicycling town.
