Planning Committee Meeting
April 25, 2011
Summary of this Meeting will serve as a report to the Lexington Human
Relations Committee at the May 6, 2011 meeting.
Nancy Earcy, Fuang, and Leona met for the third time at the home of Nancy Earcy.
Susan, Fuang and Bob had conflicts along the way, but we consistently held the
meetings and will hold meetings twice a month until we know we can shut down
for the summer.
Nancy has continued to have good luck in finding information about the Lexington
Civil rights Committee (LCRC) and the Lexington Commission on Suburban
Responsibility (LCSR) from the Lexington Minuteman Archives and the
Selectmen's Office. She and Fuang will continue to do research at the Historical
Society Archives
We came up with a list of things to do which will probably change in some way or
be added to as necessary.
1. Set a date — a suggestion was first Sunday in November
2. Develop a project timeline from now until summer and meet again in early
September.
3. Members have pulled names from past lists to call and pull information from
what they may remember about the Civil Rights era here in Lexington
regarding housing, education and community relations.
4. Invite each potential speaker to meet with the planning committee
5. Set up a program to include a panel, exhibits and music.
7. For Housing, we need to research housing Realtors who were active at the
time to possibly be a panelist as well as a person involved in testing.
8. For Education, we need to come up with a capable speaker who can inform
us on the atmosphere, etc. as Lexington becomes involved with METCO.
9. For Community Relations, we need probably someone from the Council of
Churches, Clergy, or Brotherhood — whatever that active group was called at
the time.
10. We will develop a timeline for exhibit that shows when the National laws
came into play and how Lexington citizens and town government reacted to
them.
11. We need to develop a budget to cover transportation, printing, and other
incidental costs in order for Al to petition the Selectmen for funding. We are
interested in a couple of speakers coming from a distance such as Edgar
smith and Landon Lindsey. There may be more candidates closer at hand.
It was suggested that we have a booth at Discovery Day. That may have a cost
attached to it, but it would be the beginning of our Publicity. We could develop a
small Save - the -date flyer to hand out at that time, talk about our committee, what
we have done and what we plan to do.
Respectively Submitted,
Leona W. Martin for the
