A quorum of 5 was present. Members Present: Sandra Shaw, Howard Vogel, Dick Thuma, Vice Chairman, and Rick DeAngelis, Chairman, Wendy Rudner Members Absent: Staff Present: Karen Simmons, Director of Recreation Others Present: The Recreation Committee meeting began at 7:00 p.m. The meeting acted on the following items: 1. Citizens and Other Boards - none 2. Minutes of February 23, 2011 Wendy Rudner moved and Howard Vogel seconded acceptance of the February 23, 2011 Recreation Committee Meeting as written. The motion was approved by a vote of 3— 0 (Sandra Shaw and Rick DeAngelis not present for the vote). 3. Town Meeting Articles Karen Simmons briefly reviewed the Capital Articles to be presented at Town Meeting tonight, March 30, 2011. • Howard Vogel will present the Town Pool Renovation... Article 9 • Rick DeAngelis will present Phase Two of the Center Drainage Project... Article 8(g) • George Burnell will present the Park Improvement — Athletic Fields... Article 10(o) 4. Greenways Corridor Committee Karen Simmons briefly reviewed the charge of the Greenway Corridor Committee. Selectwomen Deb Mauger requested a liaison from the Recreation Committee to serve on the Greenway Corridor Committee. After a brief discussion, Howard Vogel volunteered to serve as the liaison. Wendy Rudner made a motion to recommend Howard Vogel to serve as the Recreation Committee liaison to the Greenway Corridor Committee. Richard Thuma seconded Town of Lexington Recreation Committee 1625 MASSACHUSETTS AVENUE * LEXINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS 02420 the motion. The motion was approved by a vote of 4 -0 (Rick DeAngelis was not present for the vote). 5. Busa Farm Update • Karen Simmons informed the committee that the Busa Land Use Proposal Committee presented their final report including a recommendation to the Selectmen on March 14th. It was favorable for a farm. The Recreation Committee had a discussion about the next steps. Sandra Shaw asked that members of the Recreation Committee submit a letter to the Lexington Minuteman. • Discussed Hennessey Field and the transfer to Conservation when Recreation discussed building athletic fields to address needs of the community. The Town/Recreation lost 2 full size and a 314 size soccer fields at Harrington. In addition, Recreation lost the ability to permit at the same level at Fiske School after the new construction. The field size is smaller and does not allow for overlap permitting of the fields. 6. Recreation Report • Karen Simmons informed the Recreation Committee that the Aquatics Manager position was filled by Robert O'Brien. Robert is a teacher at St John's Prep School. This is a key manager position in the summer. • Registration is ongoing for spring and summer programs. • Pine Meadows Golf Club opened today (March 3 0, 2011). • Sandy Alexander retired in early February. She will be working part time /hourly and will assist in the training of her replacement, Melinda Corssino. • Diamond, Clarke, and the Center natural grass fields tentatively are scheduled to open on Monday 414/11. • The Irving H. Mabee Pool Complex and the Old Reservoir will open on Saturday June 4, 2011. • Recreation hosted a lacrosse tournament and a soccer tournament over the past two weekends at Lincoln Park. No issues were reported. • Two portable toilets will be delivered to Lincoln Park on 4/ 1 /11 for the season. • The Lexington Youth Sports Summit was held on Monday March 28, 2011. The turnout was disappointing with approximately 22 people attending. The event was run by the Lexington Youth Sports Advisory Council. It was co- sponsored by the Recreation Department, LUSC, Little League, Babe Ruth, LYL, Lexington/Bedford Pop warner, Travel Basketball and Lexington/Bedford Youth Hockey. The topics were "Sports injuries: Prehab vs Rehab" by Peter Stone, Physical Therapist and "Concussions and Brain Injuries" by Dr. Alex Taylor, PsyD. 7. Other Reports • The next meeting of the Recreation Committee will take place on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. in the Recreation Department Office in Estabrook Hall.
