A meeting of the Design Advisory Committee was held on November 3, 2010 at 7:30 pm in the Ellen Stone
room at Cary Hall. A quorum of eight was present.
Members Present: Tim Lee (Chair), Bruce Creager, Steve Vincent, John Frey, Colin Smith, Bahig Kaldas,
Richard Friedson, Brigitte Steines
Members Absent: Alenka Slezak, Ginna Johnson, Betsy Whitman, Richard Brown
Approvals: Minutes of the previous meeting were approved with minor corrections
The meeting acted on the following items:
ZBA — 187 -189 Bedford Street, Sign i Application
The DAC reviewed the application and had the following comments. Please see the attached letter sent to
the Board of Selectmen, Planning Department and ZBA
1. Internally illuminated signs are not acceptable under the current by -law
2. The sign is very large and a pylon signs like this one would typically not be acceptable because it
exceeds the 5' height threshold
3. Although more difficult the DAC encourage the applicant to pursue external illumination of the sign
which would comply with the current by -law requirements
After reviewing the proposal and circumstances of this application the DAC can not recommend approval
for internal illumination of this sign as it currently exists and recommends external illumination.
The following documents /exhibits used at the meeting are attached:
1. Photos of existing sign conditions & proposed sign drawing 01/14/10 — submitted by Barlow Signs
& Applicant
2. Letter and affiliated documents from Caroline Fitzgerald 10/27/10
Planning Board - 94 Hartwell Ave., Sign i Application
The DAC reviewed the application presented and had the following comments.
1. Internally illuminated signs are not acceptable under the current by -law
2. Larger `Waxy O'Connors' sign too big, over kill, not necessary especially at that size
3. `Waxy O'Connors' sign doesn't comply to 3' height requirement, reduce to two lines, smaller
lettering complying with requirements
4. Limit sign addition to only one smaller sign over door
5. DAC suggested up lighting front of building to attract attention rather then more signage since there
is already a freestanding sign at street
The following documents /exhibits used at the meeting are attached:
1. Site plan 09/01/10
2. Sign drawing no date
3. Photo simulation of front no date
Other Business: None
Respectfully submitted, Tim Lee (Chair, scribe)

Re: 187 -189 Bedford Street, Sign Application
At its regular meeting on November 4, 2010 the DAC reviewed the proposal to allow internal
illumination of an existing freestanding sign at 187 -189 Bedford Street.
After reviewing the proposal and circumstances of this application the DAC can not recommend
approval for internal illumination of this sign as it currently exists and recommends external
illumination. The DAC offered several design alternatives and recommended the applicant return to the
DAC for further review of a design that will externally illuminate the sign.
Respectfully submitted,
Timothy D. Lee, ASLA, Chairman
Lexington Design Advisory Committee
