Mrs. Mead shared a faculty discussion with the Council members
regarding initial work to define Harrington pro-social expectations.
The work continues with updates to follow.
Currently, expectations that have been named include being 1.
Friendly 2. Responsible 3. Resilient 4. Empathetic and 5. Being a
Problem Solver. We are trying to promote student self awareness,
self management, social awareness and decision making.
A suggestion was made to change the wording of where one could
find the School Council minutes on the website from Reports to
School Council Minutes.
Another suggestion was to change the voice mail so it reflects the
current person’s voice and name.
Fourth Grade Grant Proposal
3. was presented by Grant to
purchase student magazines that focus on nonfiction reading and
writing. They are related to the fourth grade standards or feature high
interest topics. The magazines will be rotated throughout the fourth
grade classrooms and used for many years. There are three magazines,
they are: Kids Discover, Crickett and Storyworks. The requested
amount for the grant is $591.42. The grant proposal was reviewed and
approved.
4.Collaborative Problem Solving in Action
The parking problem and dismissal are being addressed with a new
plan that was put into action by Grant Smith, Angelique Swingle and
Suzanne Bruno. Monday’s dismissal went well with most cars being
gone from the dismissal lane by 3:21. An issue that could be
addressed in the future is how to get older siblings to come out of the
building at the same time as their younger siblings so cars can depart
sooner. Grant is meeting with Angelique and Suzanne B. to discuss
any adaptations to the current plan.
5. Pro-Social Goal Discussion
* The Globe article about knowing the difference between entitlement
and empowerment was shared by Elaine.
*The district web-site on Stress Reduction is
http://lhs.lexingtonma.org/Stress/index.html
Suzanne shared the website listed above which is a great resource to
find information about workshops concerning stress and resiliency
and parental education programs. This website is hidden and it was
suggested that Elaine forward it to Cindy Snell who could tell parents
about the website through a link. There is also a new Parents Resource
bulletin board in the front hall that has postings about parent
workshops. It was suggested that an article be written for the
Harrington Herald to promote the parent educational events for the
next issue. The idea of adding information to the article such as what
stress looks like in an elementary child might help parents decide if
the workshop is an area of interest for them.
Next month we will discuss the writing initiative at Harrington
School.
Next meeting is December 14, 2010.
