Suzie Barry called the meeting to order at 5:30 pm.
The December 2, 2010 minutes were approved with one change.
Patriots’ Day, Monday, April 18, 2011
The committee discussed suggestions made last year to improve upon the events of the
day.
Suzie will send an e-mail to everyone announcing the planning meeting for town
departments and all others scheduled for Wednesday, February 2, 2011 at 9:30 am in
the Selectmen’s meeting room.
A meeting with town departments (police, DPW, possibly fire), Lexington Minutemen,
th
10 Regiment of Foot, Town Celebrations Committee and the Commission on Disability
is still in the planning stages. Items to be discussed are accessibility of Patriots’ Day
events, including the reenactment and afternoon parade. Other events for that day will
need to be looked at as well.
Youth parade and ceremony on the green
Committee members feel that the morning parade is well organized and runs smoothly.
There was discussion again about assigning a committee member as
organizer/facilitator to keep things moving at the ceremony on the green.
A suggestion was made to have each speaker escorted to the podium by a Minuteman
or two.
A motion was made and approved that beginning this year, the William P. Fitzgerald
Appreciation Award will not be presented at the morning ceremony on the green but
will be given instead at the Memorial Day event.
A motion was made but no vote taken to remove the reading of the Governor’s
Proclamation from the program. Suzie will research the historic significance of including
the document at this event.
Afternoon parade
Most applications are in.
Float invitation letters were mailed; application deadline is mid-March. Two or three
responses have been received so far.
The float meeting is scheduled for January 27, 2011 at 7:30pm in room 111, Town Office
Building.
Suzie will order two more golf carts so that we have a total of eight.
The committee talked about whether or not there should be an official start to the
parade.
More people are needed to help at the end of the parade.
To facilitate a more organized ending of the parade, Suzie will ask the police department
to close Worthen Road to all traffic between Massachusetts Avenue and Waltham
Street.
Regarding the banner bearers and permission slips, an online sign up will be offered,
and the invitation to participate will be extended to all grades.
T-shirts or some other item to thank the children was suggested.
Meeting adjourned at 6:45 pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Sandy Podgorski
