P.M, at Cary Memorial Library (Meeting Room). The program entitled, "L'AFFAIRL, The Tragedy of Alfred
Dreyfus" will be presented by Ron Rosenthal. L'Affiare began with the unjust conviction of an innocent man for
treason, and concluded with his partial, but incomplete, vindication. It exposed the moral bankruptcy of the French
government, the press, and particularly the French Army. The flaws in the French Army remained, and would
contribute to the French collapse in 1940. Mr. Rosenthal is a retired Orthopedic Surgeon. He was a history major
at the University of Michigan, and graduated from Washington University School of Medicine. He has presented
several times to the Lexington Veterans' Association, and has led courses at Harvard Institute for Learning in

FEBRUARY 2011 LEXINGTON SENIOR CENTER NEWS 5
"One in Sir : Act Now "
Kelly Stanislawzyk, RN, Human Services Nurse
One out of every six people worldwide will have a stroke in their lifetime. Cardiovascular diseases , including stroke,
are our nation's number one killer. That's why it is so important to reduce your risk factor, know the warning sign's, and
know how to respond if warning signs occur. The World Stroke Association wants you to "Act Now " by taking on these
six challenges to lower your stoke risk:
1. Know the risk factors you can do something about — high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol -
and keep them in a healthy range.
2. Be physically active and exercise regularly.
3. Adopt a healthy diet.
4. Limit alcohol consumption.
5. Avoid cigarette smoke. If you smoke, seek help to stop now.
6. Learn to recognize the warning signs of a stroke and how to take action.
A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of your brain is interrupted, depriving brain tissue of oxygen. Within
minutes, brain cells begin to die. Few people know the symptoms of stoke. Learning them and acting FAST when they
occur, could save your life or the life of a loved one.
Common stroke symptoms include:
• Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg — especially on one side of the body
• Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding
• Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
• Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
• Sudden severe headache with no known cause
Reduce your chances of having a stroke by learning these risk factors and working with your doctor to help reduce
your risk. Recognize the warning signs of a stroke. Stroke is a medical emergency... every second counts! Call 9 -1 -1 im-
mediately if you or someone close to you is having warning signs of stroke.
The Lexington Senior Center will present the "Act FAST- Rapid Response to Stroke" program, designed by the Mas-
sachusetts Department of Public Health on February 8 at 1:00 PM at the Cary Memorial Library. See page 2 of the
Newsletter for details. This class is offered each year and gives you practical information on how to recognize and respond
to a health emergency so you or your loved one can get help in time!
