Tree Committee Minutes November 4, 2010
Topic-draft of Tree Planting Protocol
Planting Methodology Considerations: Implementation Considerations:
Approved location and species
Ease of planting Bag planting system-Pruning roots reqd
Ease of watering(watering plan) 4 inch Perforated tubing
Stabilize root ball 3 stake method-remove after 2 years
Protect tree Staking
Soil Conditioning Hydrogel and compost (20% by volume)
Compost free from Hartwell Ave station
Item 2-Ease of watering-Install when planting 2 or 3 one foot sections or a 6-8 foot
length of coiled 4 inch perforated tubing
The ideal system would allow for DPW to perform fast, effective watering on new
trees. Above ground systems appear marginal in their effectiveness.
Planting-We have backhoes and a 19 inch auger, why are they not used?
Other thoughts-Limit GRAFTED stock, review WHERE to plant, review WHEN to
plant, Focus on NATIVE tree selection
How can the DPW and Tree Committee /Volunteers work together for a better result?
Tree Committee/Volunteers could prune root ball while DPW prepares hole and
compost/hydrogel
Gerry Paul/Jim Wood Estabrook Dunstan Chestnut planting 1 Nov 2010
2hrs X 2men=4man hours(added compost and staked)
Anne Senning/Jim Wood Partial Survey of trees planted in 2010: 1/3 to 1/2 are
struggling.
