OCTOBER 2010 LEXINGTON SENIOR CENTER NEWS 5 From the Health Corner: "Flu Shot Basics" Charlotte Rodgers, RN, Director of Human Services and Kelly Stanislawzyk, RN, Human Services Nurse It's time to think about Flu Shots again. Seasonal flu is caused by influenza viruses that infect people every year. In New England, flu season usually begins in December and lasts until April. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) advises that everyone over the age of 6 months should get a flu vaccine.People at the highest risk for complications from the flu include: pregnant women, children under the age of 5 and persons age 50 and older. The most common flu symptoms are: ❖ Sudden onset of fever and cNAghing •'• Tiredness or weakness • Body Aches/Headache /Chills Seniors are at increased risk of getting complications from the flu, and the most common of these is pneu- monia.
