Tree Committee
Minutes of Meeting of July 8,2010
A meeting of the Tree Committee was held on July 8, 2010 at 201 Bedford
Street, Samuel J. Hadley Building, Room 125. A quorum of 6 was present.
Members Present: John Frey, Jewel Kuljian, Gerry Paul, Anne Senning, Nell
Walker, Jim Wood. Also, present: David Pinsonneault (Tree Warden), Deb
Mauger (Selectmen liaison), Jane Beswick (Friends of Trees).
Members Absent: Karen Longeteig.
The meeting acted on the following items.
1. Approved minutes of June 10, 2010 with corrections. Appointed Gerry Paul as
scribe.
2. Gerry explained a proposed amendment to the tree bylaw. We will ask for
input from the Selectmen at their meeting on Monday July 12,
3. Tree Warden items:
a. Statistics: 704 total sites, 579 closed; trees to plant 2109, planted 1374;
trees to remove 876, removed 691. Fees of $22,550 have been collected for the
2250 inches of trees removed.
b. Street tree planting is progressing. Trees have been planted on Fletcher
Ave (4), Winchester Drive (6), the visitors center and all crab-apples have been
planted. Sourwoods: 3 planted at Harrington, 2 on Winchester Drive.
d. Newly planted trees are being watered and will be fertilized in the fall.
e. Jane will contact Pat Goddard about watering of trees planted at schools.
c. Dave will send information about Essellin tree to Jane.
d. Dave reported that he has had no complaints about recent NSTAR pruning.
e. Dave reported that some trees do die due to gas leaks but it is very difficult
to prove this to National Grid.
f. No update on Asian Longhorn beetle at Jamaica Plain. Dave's people
inspect for the beetle when doing tree work.
g. Dave, John and Jim will review the House bill No. 4791 to understand its
impact on Ch. 87 and report back.
h. There will be a Tree Nursery work day on Monday July 12, 8:00 am.
4. We agreed to discuss other options for Commemorative Tree markers and
ways to streamline the process at our next meeting.
5. Belfry hill: There will be a work day on Tuesday July 20, at 8:30 am. On July
7, 72 plugs of Carex Appalachia were planted and on July 6, some Black
Swallow wort was removed.
6. Jane will contact Karen for more information on the proposed Distinctive White
Pine at 40 Prospect Hill Road.
7. We discussed "open meeting law" changes.
There were no documents used at the meeting. There was no remote
participation. The meeting was not recorded.
