Lexington Tree Committee Minutes May 13, 2010
Members Present: John Frey, Chair; Jewel Kuljian, Deborah Mauger, Selectman Liaison;
Karen Longeteig, David Pinsonneault, Supt. of Public Grounds/Tree Warden; Anne
Senning, Nell Walker, James Wood, FOT: Barbara Kent, Jane Beswick.
Scribe: James Wood was appointed. Minutes of April 8, 2010 were approved with
corrections.
Tree Warden’s Report:
Tree removal applications and activity
Total sites: 697 Total closed: 566
Total to plant: 2081 Total planted: 1346
Total to remove: 862 Total removed 671
Total inches diameter: 2086
Fees collected since 8/4/08 $20,860
b. St. Brigid Tree Protection-We will attempt to protect two trees affected by
condemned house moving project. Dave Pinsoneault will follow up.
c(i). Street tree planting locations. Anne will meet with Joel and Chuck to
scope out street planting locations to be accomplished over the next two
weeks. (Planting completed by 27 May 2010)
This afternoon DPW/Tree Committee members will meet with
Representatives at 21 Fletcher to discuss street tree planting.
Commemorative trees: the Esselin Commemorative Red Maple tree was
planted at the Monroe Cemetery by the DPW. Planting of two
Commemorative trees at Lincoln Park planned for Completion by 21 May
2010.
c(ii) Crabapples from the Tree Nursery for the Schools and the LF&GC will
be planted this Saturday, May 15, 2010. Karen will coordinate with Shawn
Newell re plantings at Hastings and Fisk.
c(iii)Tree honoring Jeanne Krieger location needs to be staked at Tower Park.
c(iv) Nursery work date was set for today May 13, 2010 primarily for laying
of landscape fabric for the remaining rows not covered.
c(v) Dave Pinsonneault will plant the 5 bareroot basswoods next week
(completed by 5/21/2010)
Belfrey Hill planting/weeding Report: Regularly three people, John, Nell and Anne being
joined on occasion by Karen, Jane and Jewel. Work has been accomplished on 7 (seven)
Tuesday and Thursday mornings, beginning 4/20/10 and ending 5/11/10. 147 plants,
including 4, 2 gallon trees, 57 ferns, and 86 wild flowers, most of 2 quart size. In addition
plants from John and Nells back yards.
Foti planted 6” diameter bareroot Valley Forge Elm at Hastings Park. Good Minuteman
article covering the planting.
What are the plans for replacement of the 2004 Arbor Day tree that died at Merriam
Street. Dave Pinsonneault will replant near term.
Dave Pinsonneault is looking into why the N Star pruning at Bill Mix house, 153 Grove
Street (Lewis Tree was the pruning contractor) was so severe.
Nell reported that she had 4 commemorative plaques, 3 for Lincoln Park and 1 for Tower
Park.
Discussed if we should change the June meeting date. Decided to hold the scheduled
meeting date of June 10, 2010.
Friends of Trees – Distinctive Tree Project: A photo and article regarding the Mulliken
Oak will be submitted to the Minuteman for publication.
Web Site Update-Karen will add the Setback Planting Agreement and the corrected
bylaw to the Web Site. Anne will send material, however, planting at Belfry hill will
remain the schedule priority.
Other-Disagreement between neighbors at 6 Castle Street regarding pruning of Japanese
Maple tree and roots to the property line. Dave Pinsonneault will attempt to mediate.
Pending:
Cost estimate for CPA bittersweet removal grant application. Action Gerry
Paul, completion date not known.
