The word arthritis literally means "joint inflammation ", and can refer to over 100 individual diseases. Arthritis is a chronic disease that can last on and off for a lifetime. The symptoms of arthritis affect the basic movements that you need for everyday activi- ties, and cause pain. Nearly 1 in 5 adults have arthritis, and it is the leading cause of disability in Americans over the age of 15. Baby boomers are now at prime risk for arthritis as more than one half of those with the diagnosis are under the age of 65! If your doctor has told you that you have arthritis, what can you do to ease the pain and inflammation and maintain your joint function? Most experts agree that exercise- that's right, moving your joints- can help relieve joint pain and increase function. Exercise strengthens the muscles around the joint, which then helps to take the stress off of the joint. Exercise also increases flex- ibility, reduces stiffness, increases endurance and can give you a sense of accomplishment. Exercise is known to improve mood and self - esteem, help you sleep bet- ter, keep your weight under control and give you more energy. Before you start any exercise program, it is impor- tant to check with your doctor and /or physical therapist for guidelines that apply to you. Most experts advise 30 minutes of exercise, 3 times per week. You do not have to do it all at once- in fact, every day activity such as gardening, vacuuming the house or washing your car all count! The Lexington Senior Center offers several fitness classes for all levels of fitness- for more information on these classes, check out the fitness sec- tion of the newsletter. The Arthritis Foundation offers Aquatic Fitness Programs at the YMCA in Waltham and Woburn. Their website also offers information and support- find them at www.arthritis.org And lastly, plan to attend the April "Lunch and Lec- ture" program on Monday April 12th at 11:30 AM. The presenter is Dr. Alan Marks, M.D., a Rheumatologist from Concord, MA who will discuss the latest informa- tion about treating arthritis. You must sign up for this program!
