What is the U.S. Census 2010? • The U.S. Census 2010 is a count of everyone living in the United States • The census is mandated by the U.S. Constitution. • Your participation in the census is required by law — it takes less than 10 minutes to complete. • Federal law protects the personal information you share during the census (Title 13, U. S. Code, Section 9). It is illegal for the U. S. Census Bureau, or its employees to share your personal information with anyone, including other government agencies such as law enforcement, IRS, Welfare, FBI or Immigration. • Census data are used to distribute Congressional seats to states, to make decisions about what community services to provide, and to distribute $300 billion in federal funds to local, state and tribal governments each year. The U.S. Census 2010 population totals will determine the number of seats each state will hold in the House of Representatives and how legislative districts will be redrawn. MEMA recommends that you have a "Winter Emergency Supply Kit" in your home that includes the following: Flashlight and extra batteries Portable radio with extra batteries Charged cell phone First aid kit Essential prescription medications Non - perishable food Manual can opener Water (one gallon per person /per day) Extra blankets Fire Extinguisher Remember that many injuries occur as people deal with the aftermath of a large storm - including over- exertion, hypothermia and frostbite and burns from the improper use of fires or space heaters. Consider the following tips: Don't attempt to remove ice or snow if you have had a heart attack, a history of heart disease, high blood pressure or high cholesterol levels. The effort of shoveling causes a rapid rise in heart rate and blood pressure, and can be very dangerous. It's worth spending the money to have this tiring task done for you. J Winter car travel can be dangerous. Allow extra time. Monitor the weather conditions carefully and adhere to travel advisories. Keep a winter storm survival kit in your car. This kit should include a blanket, food, flares, gloves and first aid supplies. As you plan for winter weather, think about your neighbors - is there someone you should check in on? If you have questions about how to prepare for winter weather, please call the Senior Center at 781 - 861 -0194. &i Alp, Z - L — L 6D 5 —' a5 CL - 0 '- L + as LL —j E c o o cu co CD > 0 C/) (.0 z w a- w >P- m . . . . . . . . . . 8 LEXINGTON SENIOR CENTER NEWS JANUARY 2010 Matchmaker Match your skills to our needs.
