FROM THE DIRECTOR'S CORNER:
Happy New Year, 2010!
Ready or not, 2010 is here! When this newsletter arrives, we will be in the
middle of our kitchen and dining room renovations. This project will include
new countertops, new sinks and a new dining room floor. Added to the make-
over is fresh coat of paint and new curtains. Please call the Senior Center for
updated information and to find out the exact date for the grand re- opening
of the dining room! Remember, if you need Meals on Wheels, that program
continues, it is only the LexCafe that is closed.
Are you ready for winter emergencies? Be sure to read the "From the Health
Corner" for Winter Weather Safety tips to help you prepare. If you are on
oxygen, in a wheelchair or have another condition that you would like us to
know about, please call Assistant Director of Senior Services, Carrie Johnson.
Staff at the Senior Center is available to provide a telephone check in, or safety
check for you.
We all wish you a happy and healthy New Year.

THE U.S. CENSUS IS COMING!
What is the U.S. Census 2010?
• The U.S. Census 2010 is a count of everyone living in the United States
• The census is mandated by the U.S. Constitution.
• Your participation in the census is required by law — it takes less than 10 minutes to complete.
• Federal law protects the personal information you share during the census (Title 13, U. S. Code, Section 9).
It is illegal for the U. S. Census Bureau, or its employees to share your personal information with anyone,
including other government agencies such as law enforcement, IRS, Welfare, FBI or Immigration.
• Census data are used to distribute Congressional seats to states, to make decisions about what community
services to provide, and to distribute $300 billion in federal funds to local, state and tribal governments
each year.
The U.S. Census 2010 population totals will determine the number of seats each state will hold in the House
of Representatives and how legislative districts will be redrawn.

t 3 From the Health Corner: o
PREPARING FOR WINTER WEATHER
Charlotte Rodgers, RN, MA
d
The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) reminds everyone that a winter storm can
bring large snow accumulations, extreme cold, icing on trees and power lines and the possibility that
you may be without utilities or other services for a period of time. MEMA recommends that you have
a "Winter Emergency Supply Kit" in your home that includes the following:
Flashlight and extra batteries Portable radio with extra batteries
Charged cell phone First aid kit
Essential prescription medications Non - perishable food
Manual can opener Water (one gallon per person /per day)
Extra blankets Fire Extinguisher
Remember that many injuries occur as people deal with the aftermath of a large storm - including over-
exertion, hypothermia and frostbite and burns from the improper use of fires or space heaters. Consider
the following tips:
Don't attempt to remove ice or snow if you have had a heart attack, a history of heart disease, high
blood pressure or high cholesterol levels. The effort of shoveling causes a rapid rise in heart rate
and blood pressure, and can be very dangerous. It's worth spending the money to have this tiring
task done for you.
J Winter car travel can be dangerous. Allow extra time. Monitor the weather conditions carefully and
adhere to travel advisories. Keep a winter storm survival kit in your car. This kit should include a
blanket, food, flares, gloves and first aid supplies.
As you plan for winter weather, think about your neighbors - is there someone you should check in
on? If you have questions about how to prepare for winter weather, please call the Senior Center at
781 - 861 -0194.
