FROM THE DIRECTOR'S CORNER:
Summer - warm breezes and life at a slower pace... But, you will still find lots
to do at the Senior Center! In July and August we offer movies once -a -week
with lemonade and popcorn. There are a number of educational programs and
discussion groups to attend, fun trips, two ice cream socials and a Summer
Barbeque.
The Human Services Department is pleased to welcome Carrie Johnson, LCSW,
to our staff as the Assistant Director of Senior Services. Carrie is a clinical social
worker who has worked in elder services for many years. She will be responsible
for the Senior Services Department as well as the Senior Center, and she will
be working closely with Barbara Deveau, the Senior Services Coordinator. Also,
we're planning a coffee in September so that you will have the opportunity to
meet with staff. Say hello to Carrie when you see her this summer!
The Senior Center exercise area has a new ping pong table, funded by the
Friends of the Council on Aging. The Friends also partially fund other costs as-
sociated with the exercise programs. Starting this summer, you will see a donation
box on the lower level near the fitness area. Your voluntary donation into this
box will go to support fitness programs and equipment at the Senior Center.
Don't forget to sign up for your "My Senior Center" swipe card. Using this
system to check in, when you come to the Senior Center, is important. The sys-
tem helps us track attendance and program use. Staff then uses these numbers
to report statistics to the Executive Office of Elder Affairs (EOEA). The EOEA
grant funds many programs and services for older adults in all Massachusetts
towns, including Lexington.
Did you know that we have over 120 volunteers? What a great group! In June
we celebrated the efforts of the volunteers that help to keep the Senior Center
and all of our programs running. As always, if you have an hour (or 2 or 3) to
share, give us a call.

Calorie Listing at Chain Restaurants
In an effort to provide Massachusetts consumers with im-
portant health information, the Massachusetts Public Health
Council has recently approved rules requiring large chain
restaurants to provide calorie information for the food that
they sell. Those restaurants will be required to provide that
information at the point of purchase either on the menu
board or on the restaurants menu.
The new rules will take affect in November 2010 and
will effect approximately 50 chain restaurant companies.
"This is a major step in the right direction in fighting the
obesity epidemic in our state," said Massachusetts Depart-
ment of Public Health Commissioner John Auerbach. "With
more than half of our adult population and one -third of
our middle and high school students either overweight or
obese, we need to do more to address this problem. We
know that providing this information will help our residents
make more informed choices ".

Keeping Your Cool in Hot Weather,
and Other Summer Safety Tips
Charlotte Rodgers, RN,
Director of Human Services
It's that time of year again - summer! We hope
you will join us at the senior center for some in-
teresting health programs, and some summertime
lunches and socials.
Sun Safety:
Did you know that your skin is the
largest organ of your body? The skin
is more than just a shell- it actually
serves as a barrier against infection and
injury, regulates internal body temperature, pro-
duces Vitamin D, removes waste products from
our body, shields us from forms of radiation and
provides us with a sense of touch. Practice sun -
safety: stay out of direct, intense sun and always
use sun protection, including sunscreen and a hat!
Watch for changes in your skin, and see your
doctor if you notice a trouble spot.
Keeping Cool
Older adults are more likely to experience problems with pro-
longed heat waves of over -90 degree temperatures with high dew
points. Risk factors include age, disease and even medication.
Many blood pressure medications, for example, are diuretics.
They remove salt and fluid volume from the body. Coupled with
perspiring from high temperatures, these medications could lead
to dehydration, which, in turn, can lead to discomfort, confusion
and even more serious, life - threatening complications. As we
age, the mechanism that regulates thirst is not as finely tuned,
and it is therefore less likely to direct us to drink more fluids.
Drinking at least six 8 -ounce glasses of fluid every day will
help prevent dehydration!
In addition, senior's bodies are not as able to regulate body
temperature. Air conditioning is the number one protective factor
against heat illness. If you do not have air conditioning, spend
time in public facilities such as the senior center, libraries or
malls. Check in with the Senior Center during times of extreme
heat to find out if cooling centers are available. Take walks or do
gardening during the cooler hours of early morning or evening,
and wear lightweight clothing. It is also a great idea to check
in on frail neighbors to make sure they are safe.
Warning signs of Hyperthermia (Heat Stress) may include:
Fatigue Dizziness Nausea
Throbbing Headache Confusion Rapid Heartbeat
Beating the Bite
In Massachusetts, some mosquitoes can transmit eastern equine
encephalitis (EEE) virus and West Nile virus (WNV). While
your overall risk is small, people over the age of 50 have a
higher risk of developing a severe form of these illnesses, so it
is important to reduce your chances by avoiding mosquito bites.
Ways to avoid bites include:
• Wearing long sleeved -shirts and long pants.
• Stay indoors at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most
active.
• Keep screens repaired.
• Remove all sources of standing water from your property.
• Use mosquito repellents as directed on the label of the product.
For more information about staying cool and safe, this summer,
you can go to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health
website at wwwmass.gov /dph or call the Department of Public
Health Information Line at (866) 627 -7068.
