The Council on Aging Board and the Friends of the Council on Aging Board would like you to know that each board has current openings. The COA Board is appointed by the Town Manager and works with the Director of Human Services and the Assistant Director of Senior Services to develop policy and advocate services for Lexington's seniors. The FCOA is a non -profit organization that raises funds and maintains the donations given to the Senior Center. The FCOA helps to fund the programs and equipment used at the Senior Center. The Adult Supportive Day Program will close on June 30, 2009. The Town of Lexington made the decision to close the program due to declining enrollments and revenue and the pending retirement of two key employees. The Senior Services staff will work with all of the day care clients and families to make sure they find a program or care that meet their individual needs. Carolyn Griffith is the Adult Supportive Day Director and has worked for the Town for 18 years. Carolyn has warmly welcomed clients to her program, providing a safe and structured day and seeking to find each person's strengths. Marguerite McCormack is the Adult Supportive Day Assistant and has been with the Town for 11 years. She is known for her skills with gardening and her lovely voice. Although they are retiring, both Carolyn and Marguerite say that they plan to keep busy and will be looking for new things to do in their retirement. We wish them well as they start this new adventure! As always, if you have questions about the Adult Supportive Day Care Program or any of our other programs, please do not hesitate to give us a call! Card Making—Misting with Markers: Monday, June 15, 2009 at 10 am. This is an easy and fun card to make. We use water -based markers and color directly onto a rubber stamp. We spray the marker with a water mist and stamp the image onto cardstock or watercolor paper. All materials will be provided. Space is limited. The Lexington Veterans Association will be presenting a talk by Chaplain (Col. Ret.) Bill Mark titled, " Combat Related PTSD ." PTSD can have devastating effects on a serviceman or woman long after combat is over. Chaplain Mark will describe this debilitating disorder and his experiences with diagnosis, counseling, suicide - prevention and various treatments. Refreshments served. Coffee is generously provided by Starbucks of Lexington Center. Finance Matters: Tuesdays, 9:30 a m. to 11:30 a m. through June 16 (ends 11 a.m. when LexSA meets). Note: June 16th is the final meeting of the 08 -09 season. - An open discussion group focused on financial issues of interest to seniors. In June we will focus on scams and fraud. Topics throughout the year include estate planning (wills and trusts), probate, investing, budgeting and saving, risk management (insurance), taxes and additional topics suggested by members of the group. The "bad guys" continually find ways to take advantage of seniors. Ryan Carney of the Better Business Bureau will describe several of the threats we face and explain ways to foil them. Hav- ing a serious fall is one of the top indicators that precipitates a move to a less independent setting. On June 8th, the Senior Center will be hosting a speaker from House Works. The speaker will offer tips and demonstrate equip- ment to maximize home safety. The training listed below is offered by Min- uteman Senior Services for those who want to learn how to assist others to remain safe. Safe Assists Training Minuteman Senior Services is offering training to protect yourself while helping your senior friend who uses a cane, walker or wheelchair. Could you or someone you know use help keeping up with your monthly bills? The Money Management Program (co- sponsored by AARP, EOEA, and Mass Home Care) can provide a volunteer to assist with bill paying including: making a budget, sorting bills, writing checks (for YOU to sign), and reconciling checkbooks. The Senior Service Program asks participating taxpayers to work for the municipality in exchange for a reduction in their tax bill. Positions vary, the hours are flexible and are available at different sites including: the Schools, Cary Memorial Library, Town Hall, the Senior Center, Police Department, etc. t/ Applications are available through the Senior Services Department, and will be accepted for review on a roll- ing basis. t/ Applicants must be 60 years of age or older and own property in Lexington that serves as their principle residence. Gross income (including Social Security income) must not exceed $46,300 for single taxpayer or $ 52,950 for a couple. t/ The maximum credit a single taxpayer may earn is $935.00 including all withholdings per fiscal year. Telecare Program: Do you know a senior who lives alone? The Lexington Senior Center's Telecare program offers a daily telephone check in, Monday - Friday. A trained volunteer will call with a friendly hello and check to make sure all is well. If the senior needs assistance, the call is then referred to a staff member in the Human Services Department for follow up. Senior Health Outreach Program: The Senior Health Outreach Program is a service provided by the Town of Lexington to seniors that are homebound and unable to easily access health screenings. The service includes intake and needs assessment pro- vided by an RN. Consultation, referrals and home visits are also available. Dehydration occurs when a person becomes overex- posed to the sun, or sick with vomiting, fever or diarrhea, while heat stroke is caused by extreme exposure to the sun, preventing a person from sweat- ing enough to lower body temperature.
