From the Director's Corner:
As March winds blow, we'd like to thank all of you for your patience
during the recent kitchen and dining room renovations. And many thanks to
the Department of Public Facilities staff for their hard work in coordinating
this project - attention to detail and making sure everything was done on
time. Check out the March program schedule for lots of great things to do
at the Senior Center- including a St. Patrick's Day luncheon complete with
bagpipes, and another cooking demonstration by Wilson Farms!
Do you know a friend or a neighbor who could use a little extra support?
The Senior Services Department offers several programs for homebound se-
niors including daily telephone reassurance and the Senior Health Outreach
Program. These programs are coordinated by Carrie Johnson, and include a
home visit by a staff member and the development of a service plan.
And finally, we all want to remind you that there are many opportunities
for you to volunteer at the Senior Center and in the Lexington community.
Some examples of volunteer positions include: receptionist, host, dining room
assistant, fix -it shop worker, friendly visitor, meals on wheels and transportation
provider. To learn more, ask any member of the Human Services Department
staff. You are sure to find something you'll enjoy!

Statistics: Diabetes is the seventh most common cause
of death in America. 23.6 million Americans have diabetes
— 7.8% percent of the U.S. population. Diabetes can lead
to many health problems, such as heart attack, stroke,
kidney failure, loss of vision and neuropathy (a tingling
or loss of sensation in hands and feet).
Types of Diabetes:
1. Type I Diabetes occurs in young people as they are deficient
of insulin hormone.
2. Type 11 Diabetes occurs in adult and senior citizens and is
characterized by insulin resistance which may be combined
with relatively reduced insulin secretion. We will focus on
Type II Diabetes in this presentation.
3. Gestational Diabetes can occur in women during pregnancy.
"Pre diabetes" is a condition where a person has higher than
normal blood sugar levels, and leads to Type 11 Diabetes.
We will focus on Pre Diabetes in this presentation
