APPROVED MEETING MINUTES
Committee Name: Lexington Bicycle Advisory Committee
Date, Time and Location of Meeting:
January 14, 2010, 7 pm, Room 111,
Town Office Building
Members Present:
Stew Kennedy, Mike Tabaczynski, John Frey, Marita
Hartshorn, Abe Shenker (FoLB Chair), Peggy Enders (Chair).
Others Present:
Bob Hausslein, Richard Spencer
Members Absent:
Richard Canale (Planning Board Liaison), Hank Manz,
(Selectmen’s Liaison), Jerry Van Hook, Sandra Shaw (Recreation Committee
Liaison), Laurel Carpenter, George Gagliardi.
Minutes
: The December 2009 minutes were accepted.
Our meeting was sandwiched between two meetings of importance to the cycling
community. Peggy reported on the CPC meeting that had taken place a half an
hour earlier, where DPW Engineer John Livsey presented the Minuteman
Bikeway restoration proposal.
Meeting Dates
: We plan to have our February meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 10
to avoid a conflict with the LWV candidates’ night. Peggy will contact John
Livsey to see if he is available.
Bikeway Plowing:
The bikeway was well plowed on December 9 and 20. (The
Treasurer’s report will discuss costs.) There was a marginal storm on the
December 19, which resulted in some icing. In the future Peggy will instruct our
plower to plow even under marginal circumstances to avoid icing. She agreed to
update the list of plowing contributors and send their names to the Minuteman
newspaper to give a public thanks for contributions. Peggy handed out FoLB
keep-the-Bikeway-clear business cards to give to people we meet so they will
know how to contribute.
Bedford
: Peggy received a note from Terry Gleason saying the town is making
progress on the extension to Route 62 along the rail line. Stone dust or asphalt
pavement are the two options being considered for the roadbed.
Bikes Not Bombs:
Peggy mentioned that the Farmers’ Marker would like to
work with the committee on a Bikes-Not-Bombs collection early this summer.
We have asked the town about storing bikes that are donated for pick-up by the
BNB. Marita will research Bike-Not-Bombs current guidelines.
The meeting was adjourned.
Record of the Friends of Lexington Bikeways Discussion:
Treasurer’s Report:
Richard Spencer reported a balance of $5,234.05.
Expenses included two plowings: 12/09 at $280 and 12/20 at $315. It appears
that our costs are lower than those we had last year when we used the town’s
sidewalk plowers. Abe expressed regret that the town is not willing to fund the
plowing, as it is such a small part of the total snowplowing budget. The current
system also requires volunteers to open and close the gates and shovel around
the bollards, which we may not always be able to do in future years.
Town Meeting
: We discussed having a presentation at Town Meeting on the
status of the Minuteman Bikeway and will discuss content at a future meeting.
Bike Racks on Commercial Property
: Jerry sent an e-mail detailing his
dealings with Busa Liquor Store, Walgreen’s and Starbucks.
Trail Work in Conservation Land.
Since winter has set in there is no work
being done. Mike asked this item to be tabled until April.
Meeting Adjourned: We proceed to the Scenic By-Way Hearing at the Depot.
