The battle of Iwo Jima, the bloodiest campaign in Marine history, is perhaps best remem- bered by the flag raising photograph by AP photographer, Joe Rosenthal. While much has been written about the horrors and heroics of the Battle of Iwo Jima, little has been told about the development of the island into an advance base to further the US efforts in the victory over the Japanese Empire. This talk will highlight the role of the Seabees in the assault phase of the battle, the building of the airstrips, road development and necessary structures in support of the mission of Operation Detachment. Ms. Kuebler has traveled to the Pacific battlefields of Guam, Saipan, Tinian, Peleliu and Iwo Jima. She has conducted research at the naval archives in Port Hueneme California, the National Archives in Washington DC and has interviewed numerous Seabee veterans of the battle of Iwo Jima and has presented this talk to Civil Engineering Corps officers at Naval HQ in Washington DC, to naval personnel on Guam and has been a featured speaker in 2006 and 2007 at the annual Iwo Jima Historical symposium sponsored by the Combat Veterans of Iwo Jima. Join us for this lecture. All are welcome. Refreshments. Coffee is generously provided by the Lexington Center Starbucks. Heat- ing is the #2 cause of home fires in Massachusetts, causing over 14,000 fires over the past five years. Following the tips below will help ensure that you —keep warm, keep safe. The ABC's of Fire Safety: • Make sure that there are working smoke alarms on every level including one outside the bedrooms. • Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms monthly and change the batteries twice a year, when you change the clocks. • Hold home fire drills and practice a home escape plan. Be Careful When Using a Fireplace or Fuel Stove: if you heat your home by burning solid fuels [coal, firewood, pellets], be careful before, during and after using these kinds of fuels. • Have your chimney professionally checked and cleaned every year. • Keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet away. Space Heaters Need Space: • Never use space heaters as your #1 heating source. • Keep anything that can burn 3 feet away. Use only heavy duty extension cords. • Always turn the heater off when going to bed or leaving the home. • Portable kerosene heaters are illegal for use in Massachu- setts. Maintain your Heating Equipment: • Have your furnace, boiler and hot water heater profession- ally checked every year. • If you think you may smell a gas leak, move outdoors and call 911 immediately. Remember, Carbon Monoxide is The Silent Wiler: • Install carbon monoxide alarms on every level of your home. • Do not use a gas stove or oven for heat. • Keep appliance vents and exhaust pipes clear of drifting snow and bushes.
