FROM THE HEALTH CORNER:
"ACT in Time"
Stroke Warning Signs: IV
• Face: An obvious asymmetry with drooping
of one side of the face.
• Arms: One arm or leg is affected with numb-
ness, weakness or inability to move
• Speech: Slurring of speech, confusion or in-
ability to speak.
Act in Time I V
If you or someone you're with has chest dis-
comfort, especially with one or more of the
other signs, don't wait longer than a few minutes
before calling for help. Call 9 -1 -1 .... get to a
hospital right away. Calling 9 -1 -1 is always the
fastest way to get lifesaving treatment. Emergency
medical services staff can assess your medical
needs, call ahead to the Emergency Department
and can begin treatment when they reach you- up
to an hour sooner than if someone gets to the
hospital by car!
Charlotte Rodgers, RN, MA, CCM
February is designated by the American Heart Association as
"Heart Health" month, and it's a great time to think about
your own heart health, and, to learn more about how to act
quickly in response to someone who may be having a heart
attack or a stroke. The Lexington Senior Center will present
the "Act FAST - Rapid Response to Stroke" program,
designed by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health
on February 10, 2010 at 1 p.m. Details and how to sign up
are on page 1 in this newsletter. This class is offered once
or twice each year, and gives you practical information on
how to recognize and respond to a health emergency- so
you or your loved one can get help in time!
Statistics:
Coronary artery disease is America's number one killer.
Stroke is number three, and a leading cause of serious dis-
ability. That's why it is so important to reduce your risk
factors, know the warning signs, and know how to respond
quickly and properly if warning signs occur.
Heart Attack Warning Signs:
Some heart attacks are sudden and intense- the "movie heart
attack ", where no one doubts what is happening. But most
heart attacks start slowly, with only mild pain or discomfort.
Often people affected aren't sure what's wrong and wait
too long before getting help. Here are signs that can mean
a heart attack is happening:
• Chest Discomfort. Most heart attacks involve discomfort
in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few min-
utes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like
uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain.
• Discomfort in other areas of the upper body. Symp-
toms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms,
in the back, neck, jaw or stomach.
• Shortness of breath. May occur with or without chest
discomfort.
• Other signs. These may include breaking out in a cold
sweat, nausea, lightheadedness or unusual fatigue.
As with men, women's most common heart attack symptom
is chest pain or discomfort. But women are somewhat more
likely than men to experience some of the other common
symptoms, particularly shortness of breath, nausea /vomiting,
and back or jaw pain.
Podiatry Clinic: With Dr. Gimbel - 3rd Thurs-
day (please note change of day), February
18, 2010. Call 781 - 861 -0194 to schedule an

directly. Appointments scheduled from 1 p.m.
- 4 p.m.
When the Lexington Schools are closed due to
snow, all COA programming and lunches (includ-
ing Meals on Wheels) will also be cancelled.
Senior Center Staff will make every effort to
be at the center during the day to answer any
questions. Please use your judgment about ven-
turing out on snowy days because your safety is
important to us.
It's time for the SNOWBIRDS to take flight againff
If you will be away for more than one month,
would you please call the Senior Center and let
us know how long you will be gone. With that
one phone call we can stop the mailing of your
newsletter while you are away, and resume mail-
ing when you return. The Post Office does not
forward the newsletter and thus we have to cover
the cost of mailing it out plus another charge for
"Postage Due" when it's returned to us. That one
call will be greatly appreciated.
