HomeMy WebLinkAbout2009-08-13-TREE-min Lexington Tree Committee Minutes for August 13, 2009 Attendees: Tree Committee - John Frey, Chairman, Jeanne Krieger, Jewel Kuljian, Karen Longeteig, Gerry Paul, Anne Senning, Jim Wood and Nell Walker; Friends of Trees - Jane Beswick, Mary Ned Fotis and Barbara Kent. 1. Gerry Paul was appointed as scribe. The minutes of the July 9, 2009 meeting were approved with corrections. 2. Tree Warden's agenda items: Dave Pinnsoneault (absent) a) Tree removal applications and activity - unknown b) Status of trees planted by Waverly - Anne Senning reported that some of the trees planted are not in good shape. Silver Lindens are in particularly bad shape. c) Belfry Hill Status - Anne reported that 2 Whites Oaks are dead and all other plantings are alive. An abutter is watering some plantings. Nell and others will plant Scarlet Oak and White Oak seedlings. A weeding day is scheduled for Tuesday August 25th at 8:00. d) Spring 2009 planting status of 35 street trees and Matt Foti's 4 donated trees. Matt Foti's trees have been planted. Status of 35 trees to be planted is unknown. e) Marrett Rd and Concord Ave. trees - No trees on Concord Ave had to be removed. f) Replacement tree at Emery Park - not discussed. g) Roosevelt Ave trees - Brian Adley, a resident at the corner of Roosevelt Ave and Wilson Road, briefed the Tree Committee on a possible sidewalk installation on Roosevelt Ave. Tree committee members will visit the site to determine the possible impact on street trees. Jeanne Krieger indicated that, before the sidewalk installation begins, the Selectmen will revisit the decision as to what side of the street the sidewalk should be placed. h) Elm at Depot - It is believed that the tree, which has been removed, is on Depot (Hist. Soc.) property and is not a town tree. i) Off berm planting contract status - no update. 3. Nursery staking, landscape fabric - There will be a work day to put the weed barrier in place and stake trees on Thursday, August 20 at 9:00. Also, Jim will talk to Dave about removing the Walnut trees. 4. Battle Green master plan - Jim presented some initial observations/ideas about trees on the Green. We agreed to meet at the Green on Thursday September 17 at 5:30 PM to walk the area together. 5. We voted unanimously to hold future meetings at the new DPW building. 6. John will draft a thank you letter to Matt Foti for four trees donated on Arbor day. 7. CPA funds for tree preservation - not discussed 8. Friends of Trees - Distinctive Tree Project: Mary Ned presented her pictures and findings for a Copper Beech on Concord Ave just west of Waltham Street. The measurements are: 79 ft high, 219 inch circumference, 99.5 ft crown. These measurements result in a score of 99.4 out of 100 on the champion tree scoring scale. Nell updated us on the Mulliken Oak which she conjectures may be the oldest tree in Lexington. She has both current and 1972 measurements and a 19th century photo. She will apply to the Historical Society for the right to use the 19th century photo. The deadline is Oct. 15 for us all to finish our Distinctive Tree research. Meeting adjourned.
