HomeMy WebLinkAbout2009-07-31-LHRC-minLexington Human Rights Committee Meeting Minutes July 31, 2009 Present: Gerald McLeod, Joseph O'Leary, Hank Manz, Bob Kent, Linda Vine, Puran Dang , Albert Zabin, Melissa Buttaro, and Deborah Jackson Location: Meeting was held in the BOS Meeting Room — Town Hall and was called to order at 8:1OAM Updates: Reports were given by members regarding community partners • Cary Memorial Library through its "Lexington Reads" program has agreed to partner on this initiative. They would like to meet with the committee to begin planning. - Next Step /Linda will invite Connie & Elizabeth to the 9/18 meeting. • Lion's Club would like to participate and has invited a representative /s to speak at an upcoming meeting — decide who should attend and how they can participate - Next Step / Decide who should attend with Joe serving as contact • Stacy Sheehan — Manager of TD Bank North grant money was available for these kinds of community initiatives. - Next Step / HRC submit grant application TBD • David Harris — Consider inviting as speaker - Next Step / Bob Kent will pursue Programming Follow -up: 1. Department of Human Services — will they assist with oral histories component of the program. Members of the LHR committee agreed they would offer their stories — Bob Kent and Puran Dang. Melissa announced that Lexington HS would be willing to assist with the filming. - Emily 2. Rotary and Chamber of Commerce — will they partner with HRC — Joe 3. CAAL — will they partner with HRC — Fuang 4. Interfaith Clergy — will they participate in some way — Richard 5. Historian — we may need to identify a historian who can help — Linda 6. Film "We Drew A Circle" — Consider for part of the program - Leona Next Meeting & Homework: How did Lexington evolve into the community we are today? Look at changes from 1950 forward / post WWI 1 where we've come from • where we want to go as a community decide on the framework of the program, i.e. Film series, book series, how to involve local government, Interfaith Clergy Association, business & civil communities The next meeting of the HRC is scheduled for Friday, September 18 at 8:00 a.m. in Room 111 — Town Hall The meeting adjourned at approximately 9:10 am.
