Record of Votes taken and issues discussed.
Minutes
from the December 8, 2005 meeting were available but not reviewed because
the copy machine was down. They will be reviewed along with these minutes at the
February meeting. It was pointed out that approved minutes must be sent to the
Selectmen’s office, Lynne Pease. This will be in addition to sending them to the Town
Clerk and the Town Manager. The Town Manager has also requested that he be copied
on any letters LBAC sends out.
Bike Racks:
The bike rack that was at the Walgreens before their reconstruction has not
been replaced. The assistant manager has no answer on when and if it will be restored or
replaced. As we want to encourage bike racks at business areas, and as there previously
was one at Walgreens, it was decided we should send a letter to the store manager
requesting restoration of that rack. Marita offered to draft a letter and Stew agreed to send
it.
No one is aware of the whereabouts of the donated bike rack that was by the tennis
courts behind the Waldorf School. It had been stored in the woods during rebuilding of
the courts. Marita agreed to ask DPW if they have it and if so request its reinstallation.
As was decided at our December meeting, Marita and Stew wrote a letter to the
Historical Society recommending replacement of the bike racks behind the Depot
building once renovation is complete. John and Stew then met in December with Susan
Bennett and Lester Savage at which good agreement was reached on placement of the
racks and on crowd control near the door opening toward the Bikeway. There was also
agreement that we will be able to share use of a bulletin board on that back wall. John
will follow developments at the Depot.
Sidewalk Committee:
Jerry gave a liaison report on that committee’s activities regarding
Safe Routes to Schools and the town sidewalk survey that we helped with. The Safe
Routes program will be expanded from Bridge School to Bowman School in the spring.
The sidewalk map needs to have main through-trails in conservation areas added. We’re
looking for a volunteer interested in doing this. Stew will solicit a volunteer from the
Conservation Stewards directors.
Hartwell Avenue:
Jerry outlined the proposal for striping a bike / pedestrian lane on
each side of Hartwell Ave and associated signage that he will bring to the new Traffic
Mitigation Group, in his capacity as our liaison.
Bikeway Signage:
We discussed the deteriorating condition of signs along the Bikeway.
Vandalism and pilferage are taking a toll and it was decided we should take action. First
step will be to assess which signs are missing or damaged and needing replacement. It
was agreed to put this on next month’s agenda for action.
Record of Friends of the Bikeway votes and discussions.
There was no change to the Treasurers report.
A motion was approved to make and have installed, on the bike racks to go behind the
depot, plaques similar to the dedication plaques. These new plaques will inform users that
bicycles are not to be ridden on Center sidewalks.
The Historical Society commemorative brick sale for the pavement on the Bikeway side
of the Depot building was described. Notice of it should be sent to Arlington and Bedford
Bikeway committees as well.
It was agreed the FOB should send a letter thanking State Rep. Anne Paulsen, who
recently announced her retirement, for her years of bicycling and pedestrian advocacy at
the state house. Stew offered to draft it.
Next FOB newsletter should explain the need for donations to replace damaged and
missing Bikeway signs.
