HomeMy WebLinkAbout2021-04-05-ARTS-min El Lexington Council for the Arts Meeting Minutes Monday, April 5, 2021 7:00 PM— 8:30 PM Location: Remotely conducted via Zoom video conference in accordance with Town of Lexington guidelines Facilitator: Steve Poltorzycki Attendance: Present: Jillian Tung, Steve Poltorzycki, Doug Urban, Melissa Talal, Hema Gandhi,Anwell Tsai, Shalini Kakar, Marie Hewes, Jessie Zhan,Ashley Rooney, David Hoose, Lisa Hebert, and Cecily Miller(invited guest) Meeting start time: 7:03 pm I. Call to order II. Approval of March 1 meeting minutes A. Minutes were unanimously approved. III. Welcome and introductions A. New Council members, volunteers, and special guest Cecily Miller were acknowledged and welcomed. B. Attendees shared their visions of public art and described memorable experiences related to the arts during introductions. IV. Presentation and discussion led by Cecily Miller A. Ms. Miller is regarded as a leader in the field of community arts for more than 20 years. She founded and currently serves as a programming consultant for Spark Art, an organization whose mission it is to partner with artists, organizations, and community groups to create public art that is inspired by the qualities of place and explores the concerns of people. B. Ms. Miller presented a broad range of public art projects in other communities with which she was involved. The projects included sculpture, performance art, murals and other visual art, music, and other work related to arts and culture. Specific examples included footprints on the sidewalk that described a dance lesson, extra long dining tables so all community members could experience "a seat at the table", holiday lights displayed, milkweed in biodegradable balloons, and musicians spanning the Esplanade. C. Ms. Miller encouraged attendees to ponder"what is distinctive about the character and places in Lexington" as an important step in thinking about public art projects. Other questions to consider include "How would you describe what is important about the town to others," and"What are some of the values that bring people together here." E "' Lexington Council for the Arts D. Attendees engaged in dialogue during and after Ms. Miller's presentation, including possibilities for future public art projects. V Update on Go Out Doors project A. A brief update on logistic planning to date was provided. Further details will be discussed at the next Council meeting. B. A Doodle poll will be sent to Council members to gauge availability for the next project subgroup meeting. All are encouraged to attend and participate. VI. Treasurer's update A.
