IV. Presentation and discussion led by Cecily Miller
A. Ms. Miller is regarded as a leader in the field of community arts for more
than 20 years. She founded and currently serves as a programming
consultant for Spark Art, an organization whose mission it is to partner
with artists, organizations, and community groups to create public art that
is inspired by the qualities of place and explores the concerns of people.
B. Ms. Miller presented a broad range of public art projects in other
communities with which she was involved. The projects included
sculpture, performance art, murals and other visual art, music, and other
work related to arts and culture. Specific examples included footprints on
the sidewalk that described a dance lesson, extra long dining tables so all
community members could experience "a seat at the table", holiday lights
displayed, milkweed in biodegradable balloons, and musicians spanning
the Esplanade.
C. Ms. Miller encouraged attendees to ponder"what is distinctive about the
character and places in Lexington" as an important step in thinking about
public art projects. Other questions to consider include "How would you
describe what is important about the town to others," and"What are some
of the values that bring people together here."
