LEXINGTON SELECT BOARD MEETING
AGENDA ITEM TITLE:
Update on 2021 Martin Luther King Day Events and Request for Unity Walk
PRESENTER: ITEM
NUMBER:
Sam Zales, Town Celebration Sub-
Committee member I.1
SUMMARY:
Sam Z ales will provide an overview of the proposed virtual events planned for the 2021 Martin Luther King
Day celebration to the Select Board, as listed in the attached document. The Committee worked with the
Lexington Police Department for coordination/approval of a possible Car Parade.
In addition, the Town Celebrations Committee/MLK Subcommittee is requesting approval from the Select
Board for the MLK Day Commemoration events to also include a Unity Walk with approximately 10 - 15
people. It is being proposed that from the sidewalk at the Minuteman Statue, the walkers would join the Car
Parade on Massachusetts Avenue, walk at the head of the car parade and then disperse at Cary Memorial
Building.
The Committee, through the Town Manager's Office, requested feedback from the Health Department
regarding health safety protocols of a possible Unity Wally of 10-15 people. The Health Department had no
objection to a small group of walkers as long as the walkers adhere to safety regulations of mask wearing and
social distancing.

81"Annual Lexington MILK Day of Service
Monday,January 18, 2021
The Town of Lexington will hold its 28t"commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King,Jr. Day with its 8t"Annual MLK Day of Service
by shepherding our community to take part in assisting those in need. Our objective is to engage and mobilize people of all ages
to participate in events and activities to serve others. United in philanthropy under the auspices of the Town Celebrations
Committee, our target this year is to serve Z500+people through 700+volunteers. A very special thank you to our elite sponsors
at Chinese American Association of Lexington, LexPride, and Lexington Interfaith Clergy Association.
Unlike years past when we would volunteer in a gathered setting,we have adjusted this year's MLK Day of Service to be a virtual
Day of Service for most of our activities in order to keep our community safe and healthy. We hope you will take some time to
join us online or in-person safely following social distancing and masking guidelines at this year's events and activities.
