FUND FOR LEXINGTON BOARD
June 15, 2020
4:00 p.m., held by remote participation
Present: Doug Lucente, Chair; Suzie Barry; Norman Cohen; Alan Fields; Ed Grant; Paul Shupe;
Melissa Interess, Director of Human Services; Tony Serio, Assistant Director of Family and
Youth Services; and Kim Katzenback, Executive Clerk to the Select Board.
Mr. Lucente stated the remote participation meeting is being held in accordance with Governor
Baker's March 12, 2020 Executive Order suspending certain provisions of the Open Meeting
Law to allow remote participation during Massachusetts' State of Emergency due to the outbreak
of COVID-19.
1) Money Available as of May 31, 2020
Mr. Lucente reported that as of May 31, 2020, the Fund for Lexington Income balance was
$25,221.62 and the Principal balance was $260,010.47.
a. Report of Donations to Fund for Lexington COVID-19
At the March 23, 2020 the Fund for Lexington Board agreed that donations made from March
2020 until September 2020 would be made available to assist resident needs due to impacts of
Coronavirus (Covid-19). Mr. Lucente reported that$31,457 has been donated to the Fund for
Lexington during the period from March 15, 2020 through June 2, 2020.
2) Human Services Report: December 1 to May 31, 2020
Ms. Interess, Director of Human Services, reported the following activity for the funds dispersed
for the period: Fund for Lexington - $2,665 for rent payment; $3,502.99 out of the Heating
Assistance Pilot(Remaining balance - $2,497.01); Human Services Emergency Fund-
$1,700.30; and Lexpress subsidized passes fiscal year- $10,360.
Ms. Interess stated that the Human Services Emergency Fund currently has a healthy balance
from which to provide financial assistance to residents affected by COVID-19. In addition to the
$25,000 provided from the Fund for Lexington, a $250,000 donation from Takeda
Pharmaceutical Company was deposited into the Human Services Emergency Fund. She also
stated that the Lexington Housing Assistance Board dissolved its subgroup LeHAC and
transferred LeHAC's funds of approximately $9,000 into the Human Services Emergency Fund.
Ms. Interess reported that, to date, $35,947.60 has been disbursed from the Human Services
Emergency Fund to assist 20 families in need due to COVID-19. She noted that the Human
Services must first draw down from the Takeda donation. Ms. Interess asked the Board if they
would like to continue to see the COVID-19 related assistance listed as a separate line item on
the quarterly report provided to the Fund for Lexington Board. The Board was in agreement
they would like to see it as a separate item on the report.
Upon a motion duly made and seconded, by roll call, the Fund for Lexington Board voted 6-0 to
separately track and report the COVID-19 donations and expenditures.
3) Other Issues
a. Request from Trustee of Public Trusts for Funds for Center Flower Barrels
Downtown Beautification Project
Upon a motion duly made and seconded, by roll call, the Fund for Lexington Board voted 6-0 to
approve $8,639 for flower plantings and 7 replacement flower barrels for the Lexington Center
Beautification project.
b. Request from Chamber of Commerce for funds for East Lexington Flower Barrels
Beautification Project
Upon a motion duly made and seconded, by roll call, the Fund for Lexington Board voted 6-0 to
approve $3100 for the flower barrels and flowers for the East Lexington Beautification project.
4. Proposed Meeting Dates
The Board reviewed and confirmed the following dates for upcoming Fund for Lexington Board
meetings:
• September 14, 2020
• December 7, 2020
5. Approval of Minutes
On a motion duly made and seconded,by roll call, the Fund for Lexington Board voted 6-0 to
approve the December 9, 2019 and March 23, 2020 meeting minutes.
