COLLECTION
After two years of watching the growth of the graphic novel collection in the
Young Adult Area and its popularity with readers, Cary Memorial Library and the
East Lexington Branch have begun adding graphic novels to its adult fiction and
non - fiction collections. In this initial phase of introduction all the books in the
main library's collection have been selected from the McNaughton Plan's offering
of graphic novels. The McNaughton Plan is the leasing program that the library
uses to popular au ment its fiction collection; it allows the library to purchase
g
titles cheaply and return them when the demand for them has subsided.
Chief proponent of the graphic novel collections in the library is library technician
Robin Brenner who is scheduled to complete her MLS via the Univeristy of Illinois
distance learning program this summer. In addition to helping Reference and
Young Adult Librarian Pam Ikauniks instigate the young adult graphic novel
collection, Robin has participated in workshops and developed a website to help
other librarians and readers evaluate graphic novels. She and Pam Ikauniks
were part of a panel presenting graphic novels to the Metrowest Regional Library
System, she is now in Sacramento California addressing California librarians on
this topic, and the reference section of the February 1, 2003 issue of Booklist
reviewed Robin's website No Flying, No Tights: A Website Reviewing Graphic
Novels for Teens in their "Reference on the Web: Graphic Novels " calling it
"intelligently written, visually pleasing site. `
